Your dog can be the most well behaved dog in the world, or an absolute maniac the second a new person with a camera shows up. You truly never know what you’re going to get.

🐶🐶The good news? We’ll get the shot.

Sometimes that means letting them run around for a few minutes. Sometimes it means taking a break and trying again. Sometimes it means embracing the chaos until they finally realize I’m not that exciting.

The biggest thing you can do is trust the process and just chill out. Your dog picking that exact moment to become completely unhinged does not mean the photos are ruined.

Honestly, the difference between getting a good photo and having a stressful experience is usually just being able to roll with whatever is happening. Stay positive, have fun, and trust that eventually, your dog is going to look in the right direction for approximately 0.4 seconds.

And I’ll be ready.

* “Grab her face.. GENTILY.”
* “No, hand in, thumb out.”
* “Never mind, I hate that.”

When I say family photos, I don’t mean I expect your kids to sit still and smile at me for 45 minutes.

Honestly, that sounds miserable for everyone involved.

I’m not interested in screaming, bribing, or repeatedly telling your kid to “look at the camera and smile” until we finally get a photo with a wide mouth and dead eyes. 😂

Will I eventually get that classic everyone-looking-at-the-camera photo? Probably. Usually, once the first 15–20 minutes pass and the novelty of the new person, the camera, and the whole situation starts to wear off, kids (and parents) settle in a little.

But the magic is usually happening before that.

Let them explore. Let them run. Let them be silly. Let them interact with you. Let me notice the little things happening in between the “perfect” moments.

The tiny hand grabbing yours. The way your kid looks at you when they’re laughing. The random little game they make up. The snuggles that happen when nobody asked for them.

That’s the stuff I want to photograph.

Because good family photos aren’t about making your kids behave perfectly for 45 minutes. They’re about giving them room to be themselves and documenting what your family actually feels like right now.

And yes, I’ll still get the photo where everyone looks at me. I promise. 😉

Before I had kids, I knew family photos mattered.

Now that I have my own family, I understand why they matter.

It’s the tiny things I notice most now. The way they hold your hand without thinking. The missing front tooth. The curls that somehow disappear overnight. The favorite stuffed animal that gets dragged everywhere. The way they fit perfectly on your hip until one day they don’t.

Kids change so quickly. Sometimes you don’t realize what you’ve already forgotten until you look back at an old photo.

That’s what I love most about photographing families. I’m not just documenting what everyone looked like. I’m freezing the little moments that become the ones you miss the most.

If you’re hoping to have updated family photos in time for the holidays, now is the time to start planning. Fall books up quickly with weddings, and my availability for family sessions is limited every year.

Maybe it’s just the season I’m in, but it feels like almost every couple I’ve photographed lately has already been together for 10+ years.

They’ve already built a life together. They’ve bought houses, had kids, adopted pets, combined bank accounts, argued about whose turn it is to take out the trash… all the important relationship milestones.

By the time the wedding rolls around, they’re not really interested in putting on a huge production. Most of them are choosing smaller weddings and spending their money on what they actually care about: good food, good drinks, a packed dance floor, and being surrounded by the people they genuinely want there.

As a photographer, it’s been really nice to see. There’s a lot less focus on impressing everyone and a lot more focus on having a great time with the people who matter most.

That’s a wedding trend I can get behind.

Crazy getting the opportunity to work with families as they grow over the years. From bridal showers to birthdays, Athena’s baptism was just as full of light, laughter, and a whole lot of dancing as her older brother’s was several years ago.

Always such a joy working with this crew and watching everyone somehow keep dancing for hours in heels like it’s an Olympic sport 😂🇬🇷
