When an old friend asks you if you can take an old family farm picture that's been in the family for generations, repair it, enlarge it, and reprint it at a huge size of 60 inches wide, you do it!

But this wasn't just any picture, it was a small, oval-shaped, convex picture (that can't be scanned) with serious color issues. It had areas that had been hand painted, and had a glossy coating over it that had lots of dust, cracks and scuffs that all needed repaired. Challenge accepted!

This picture could only be copied by photographing it. I used a 50mp camera to capture every detail. The problem was with the convex shape, in order to maximize focus and eliminate glare, it needed to be photographed in sections - top right, middle right, lower right, and then three more on the left side. The light, reflectors, and black foam board also had to be reversed from right to left.

Then those six images were taken into Photoshop where they were all combined into one image to bring in all the best details from each one. And that started hours of processing to remove all the dust, scratches, and other blemishes. We added four 90° corners, improved the colors, and enlarged the image .... alot. Next it was printed on canvas at 60 inches wide!

Is it perfect? Nope. But is it awesome? You better believe it is! I'm happy with it and my friend is too.

Thanks Brian for trusting me with such an important piece of your family history and now it will be again displayed for many more years to come.

I think this has become my signature look. I really like the black background with just a touch of light on it for separation. In total this was five lights and a reflector. Thanks Caden (and Mom) for having us do this for you and for letting us show it here! And Caden, you just might have a future in modeling....seriously!

Here's one from the past. From this, to this! (Not the exact same picture but the same session.) We went from a windy day in front of a green backdrop in a driveway to a timeless portrait on a lighted black backdrop with a reflective floor, thanks to the magic of Photoshop! I really like this look! Thanks Shaun, Heather, and Kayla for the fun times!

(These are screen shots and don't have the same clarity as the originals.)

And for the new FPD officers who need to come in for pictures, don't worry, I won't post yours here, only this one of your boss. 🙂

Anybody ever have this problem? If you do I'll tell you what you need to do to get better results. You need to let more light in to your camera sensor. You can do that with a larger aperture, a slower shutter, or a higher ISO. The problem is that each one has downsides and any change you make anywhere always affects other things, so it's a tradeoff.

So go ahead and show that smart phone who's the boss and take it out of Auto mode!

Not ready for that? Try Portrait or Night mode. That might help too.

Here's a pretty good article with some tips on low-light phone photography. If you're an iPhone user don't let the name throw you, it applies to your phone too.

It's called 'forced perspective photography' and it makes things seem much larger or smaller than they are. Use a wide angle lens and a narrow aperture (high f stop number) so both the foreground and background are in reasonable focus. It's just for fun.
