What if we've been thinking about tourism all wrong?

People don't remember places.

They remember how those places made them feel.

The best destinations aren't defined by attractions—they're defined by experiences.

In my newest article, I explore why this simple idea should change how communities think about tourism, destination development, and economic growth.

What if the biggest challenge facing many small towns isn't marketing...
..it's mindset?

The communities seeing the greatest long-term success aren't just promoting themselves—they're intentionally building places people want to experience.

I explore why I believe small towns should start thinking like destinations, and what that could mean for places like Front Royal and Warren County.

What actually makes a tourism destination great?

Is it beautiful scenery?

A historic downtown?

Great restaurants?

Those things matter—but they're only part of the story.

The destinations people remember (and return to) have something much deeper in common.

I explore what separates places people simply visit from places they truly experience in my latest blog.

Something doesn't add up.

Shenandoah National Park continues to welcome more visitors every year...

So why are many downtown businesses seeing fewer people walk through their doors?

I dug into four years of local visitor data, compared it with conversations from Main Street businesses, and looked at what it might be telling us about tourism in Front Royal.

The answer isn't what you might expect.
Check out my article and please share it with your friends and family.

Sometimes it takes getting older to realize just how special home really was.

I grew up on a cattle farm in neighboring Rappahannock County. Summers were spent working in our family's apple packing shed in Flint Hill, helping on the farm, and exploring the countryside. At the time, I thought that was just normal life.

Looking back, I realize I was surrounded by experiences people now travel from all over the country to enjoy.

This is probably the most personal article I've written.

I'd love for you to read it.

Most people think tourism is about marketing.

I don't.

In fact, I believe that's one of the biggest misconceptions about the future of Front Royal and Warren County.

If we're serious about growing our local economy, we need to start talking about the visitor economy in a completely different way.

I share why in my latest article.
