Why “Colorado Plateau Photographers”

One of the questions that came up during our gathering last night was how we came up with the name Colorado Plateau Photographers.

The answer is simple—We’re fortunate to live within one of the most remarkable landscapes in North America.

The Colorado Plateau covers approximately 130,000 square miles across western Colorado, eastern Utah, northern Arizona, and northwestern New Mexico. It’s known for its mesas, buttes, towering cliffs, deep canyons, red rock landscapes, and incredible diversity of scenery, making it one of the world’s premier regions for outdoor photography.

Whether we’re photographing the Colorado National Monument, Grand Mesa, the San Juans, the Uncompahgre Plateau, Canyonlands, Arches, or the countless hidden gems throughout our region, we’re all connected by this amazing landscape.

That’s why we chose the name Colorado Plateau Photographers—to celebrate not only where we live, but also the photographers who explore and capture its beauty.

If you’d like to learn more about the Colorado Plateau, the National Park Service has an excellent overview:

A sincere thank you to everyone who joined us for our very first Colorado Plateau Photographers gathering!

We had a wonderful evening meeting fellow photographers, sharing ideas, and learning from our featured presenter, Mike Davenport. Mike graciously volunteered his time and gave us an inspiring look into his decades of experience as a professional photographer. Thank you, Mike, for helping launch our community!

The enthusiasm and ideas shared tonight made it clear that this is more than just a monthly gathering—it’s the beginning of a community built by photographers, for photographers.

We’re already excited about what’s ahead:

📸 July 30 – Mirror Reflection at Connected Lakes
Join us as Jarico Ford Rouseshares techniques for creating beautiful silhouettes and reflections during an evening of photography.

📸 August 18 – Monthly Gathering at the Grand Junction Library
Featured presenter Aaron AckerAaron will share Shooting with Intent and discuss his approach to photography, assignments, and gear.

📸 Fall Colors Walkabout – Montrose (details coming soon)
A special thank you to Monica Voehringer for offering to help us explore the Montrose area and share some of her favorite locations for photographing Colorado’s fall colors.

📸 Street Photography Walkabout (details coming soon)
Thank you to Jennifer Maxfield for stepping forward to help lead a street photography outing and share her passion for this unique style of photography.

One of the exciting ideas that came from tonight’s discussion is creating an optional Colorado Plateau Photographers Member Network. Our goal is to make it easy for fellow photographers to connect, discover shared interests, collaborate on outings, and learn from one another. We’ll also continue our Member Spotlights, highlighting the talented photographers who make this community so special.

If you’d like to be included in the Member Network, send us a Messenger message with any information you’d like to share, such as your photography interests, website, social media, favorite subjects, or ways you’d like to get involved. Participation is completely optional.

Thank you again to everyone who attended and helped make our first gathering such a success. We’re just getting started, and we can’t wait to see where this community goes together.

We’ve been off the grid for a few days exploring the White Rim Trail, but we’re back!

We wanted to check in and see what everyone has been photographing lately. Whether you’ve been exploring a new location, trying a new technique, or capturing a special moment, we’d love to see it.

For me, my husband has recently decided to pick up a camera and is embracing the concept of anything that captures his eye's. Loved capturing Joe with his new adventure.

Would love it if you would share one of your favorite recent images in the comments and tell us a little about it. We always enjoy seeing the different perspectives and creativity within our community.

Also, don’t forget our Colorado Plateau Photography Meetup is next Tuesday evening! We’re looking forward to an inspiring presentation by Mike Davenport and another opportunity to connect with fellow photographers. If you haven’t responded to the event yet, we’d love to have you join us! RSVP is required to ensure we have the seating needed. Hope to see you there.

📸 Coming Soon!

We’re excited to announce an upcoming Colorado Plateau Photographers learning opportunity with Jarico Ford Rouse at Connected Lakes!

Jarico will share techniques for creating striking silhouette images with beautiful water reflections during the evening’s golden light. Whether you’re looking to refine your skills or simply enjoy an evening photographing with fellow members, this will be a great opportunity to learn and connect.

We’re currently finalizing the date and time, so stay tuned for more details. We can’t wait to get out and shoot together! Photo taken by Jarico.

One of the best parts of why we created Colorado Plateau Photographers is the incredible photographers who make up our community. To help us get to know one another, we’re launching a Member Spotlight series. Every few weeks (or whenever time allows), we’ll introduce one of our members and celebrate the passion they bring to photography.

Our very first spotlight features Michelynn Hollister of Montrose, Colorado.

Michelynn is a fine art photographer and Certified Professional Photographer whose work beautifully captures the landscapes, wildlife, and changing seasons of the American West. With more than 30 years behind the camera, she has an incredible eye for light, color, and composition, creating images that invite viewers to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the natural world.

Beyond creating beautiful photographs, Michelynn is passionate about sharing her knowledge and inspiring others, and we’re honored to have her as part of our growing Colorado Plateau Photographers community.

If you haven’t already, take a few minutes to explore her work—you won’t be disappointed!

Let’s give Michelynn a warm Colorado Plateau Photographers welcome!

Question for everyone: After visiting her website, which image is your favorite and why?

Calling All Photographers!

We’re excited to have featured presenters already lined up for our July and August Colorado Plateau Photography Meetups—and we’re looking ahead!

If you’d like to share your knowledge, experience, or passion for photography with the group, we’d love to hear from you. We’re looking for future presenters who would enjoy leading a discussion or presentation on a photography-related topic.

Topics might include camera techniques, composition, lighting, wildlife, landscapes, drone photography, night photography, editing, printing, or any subject that could educate and inspire fellow photographers.

Presentations can be informal, interactive, or slideshow-based—whatever best fits your style.

If you’re interested in presenting at a future meetup, please send us a private message with:
• Your presentation topic or idea
• A brief description of what you’d like to share
• A little about yourself and your photography background

Our goal is to create a community where photographers can learn from one another, share their experiences, and inspire each other to continue growing.

We look forward to hearing your ideas!
