This afternoon, just before 3PM, The Garden City Fire Department was alerted to a building fire at an auto body shop on Commercial Avenue. Chief of Department Moody (1400) quickly arrived on scene and advised FIRECOM he had heavy smoke showing, and then relayed a Signal 10 (Working Fire). The heavy smoke from the building, which was on the border of Uniondale and Garden City, prompted The Uniondale Fire Department to also be alerted to investigate in their own district. With the confirmation of a fire in Garden City’s district, firefighters from both Garden City and Uniondale began to stretch handlines off of Garden City Engine 145 to knockdown the fire. Mutual aid from Westbury, Mineola, Franklin Square, and Hempstead also operated on scene. The operation was placed under control within 45 minutes of the original dispatch time. There were no serious injuries reported and the cause is under investigation.
