Believe it or not, I took this photo with my phone from our campground last night in Grant Village, Yellowstone. Today we are in the Tetons and I hope to see a big bull moose on this trip.

One of the wildest evenings we've had in Yellowstone.

We got a tip that wolves and a grizzly had been feeding on a carcass in Lamar Valley the night before — no guarantee they'd come back, but we went out anyway.

Storm hit almost the second we got set up. Rain for ten minutes straight. Then it cleared, and four wolves came down off the hill, straight to the carcass — and started playing. Wrestling, chasing, all the puppy-like behavior you don't expect from animals that size. We watched for almost half an hour before a second storm — thunder, lightning, the works — forced us to pack it up.

On the way out, right at the edge of Lamar Valley, the clouds broke one more time.

The rainbow that followed might be the best way this day could've ended.

A short wildlife video from higher up where the snow still hangs on and the mountain goats look completely at home. I’m still figuring out the video side as I go, but scenes like this make a pretty good case for keeping the shutter button and the record button equally busy.

A black bear out in a green meadow is already a good start. Add the wildflowers and that clean contrast between the dark coat and bright grass, and the shot pretty much builds itself. I’m always happy when a simple wildlife scene comes together like this.

These two fox kits looked like they were halfway between playtime and trouble, which is probably the normal setting. Soft light, good color, and just enough interaction to make the frame feel alive. Hard not to enjoy a scene like this one.

This coyote came through the grass carrying a little bit of the river with it. The warm light, the focused look, and dripping wet fur made the whole moment feel even better. Wildlife doesn’t always pose, but every now and then it helps you out.

A trail like this makes it pretty easy to keep walking longer than planned. Tall pines, a rocky wall off to the side, and that late-day light working its way through the scene. Not a bad place to wander around with a camera and pretend I know exactly where I’m going.
