Some places don’t feel real until you’re standing underneath them.
The first time I walked beneath the Angel Oak on Johns Island, South Carolina, I honestly didn’t know where to look first. Every branch twists in a different direction like something alive and moving. I spent probably twenty minutes just circling the tree before I ever pulled the camera up to my eye.

If I had to describe Maine in a single photograph, it might look something like this.

I captured this scene at at Eagle Lake in Acadia National Park recently. Scenes like this are why I keep coming back with a camera.

Puffins may be the celebrities, but the Razorbills refused to stay out of the spotlight.

Photographed off Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge, this moment brought together two of Maine's most remarkable seabirds in a single frame. Not bad for a photographer trying to steady a camera on a boat rolling in the swells.

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of mornings like this in Acadia.

This was captured along the coast before sunrise in September 2025 with my Sony a7R III and Sigma Art 14mm lens.

What I love about Acadia is how different it feels before everyone else wakes up. No traffic. No crowds. Just the sound of the ocean and that cool blue light slowly giving way to sunrise.

I’ve photographed this park quite a bit over the years, but mornings like this still make me stop for a second and just take it all in before pressing the shutter.

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and suddenly felt very small?

I captured this under the dark skies of West Texas at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center near Fort Davis. Out there, once your eyes adjust, the sky almost stops looking real. The Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon and every few seconds another shooting star seems to cut across the darkness.

This image was photographed with my Pentax K1 and a Rokinon 20mm lens at 20 seconds, ISO 1600, f/2.0. But honestly, the camera settings are the easy part. The real challenge is standing alone in the quiet desert at midnight, trying to take in a sky that feels bigger than your brain can process.

Some places don’t feel real until you’re standing underneath them.

The first time I walked beneath the Angel Oak on Johns Island, South Carolina, I honestly didn’t know where to look first. Every branch twists in a different direction like something alive and moving. I spent probably twenty minutes just circling the tree before I ever pulled the camera up to my eye.

The hardest part about photographing a place like this isn’t the camera settings. It’s trying to capture the feeling of standing there in person. The scale, the silence, the way the light filters through those massive limbs.

You can photograph the tree, but experiencing it is something entirely different.

Trying to photograph puffins from a boat bouncing around in Atlantic swells is not exactly easy.

I was off Petit Manan Island, Maine, both hands solidly gripping camera and lens, trying to brace myself against a railing, while these two puffins came flying past just above the water. The boat would rise, dip, swing sideways, and every time I thought I had them in frame, they were gone again.

Then for one quick second, everything lined up. It was the best capture of the trip. Rest assure, I will be getting out there a few more times before nesting season is over.

A side note - I'm very happy to report there was no sea sickness from myself on this trip. I can't say the same for three others that were on the boat.

Winter never stands a chance against this!🌷

I captured this scene at the New England Botanical Garden in Massachusetts, where the tulips seemed to stretch endlessly in every direction.
