CHARLOTTE UAS OPERATORS — NOT EVERY DRONE OPPORTUNITY HAS “DRONE” IN THE TITLE.

This one caught my attention.

On September 12, IEEE is bringing its Tech Futures: Embodied & Physical AI session to EPIC at UNC Charlotte.

This isn’t a drone conference—and that’s exactly why I think it’s worth putting on the radar.

Physical AI brings together technologies increasingly overlapping with commercial UAS:

Robotics • Computer Vision • Autonomous Systems • Edge Computing • Intelligent Infrastructure • Inspection

The program includes a robotics-lab tour, live demonstration, industry applications, panel discussion and networking. IEEE says applications being discussed span manufacturing, energy, healthcare and logistics.

For commercial drone operators, I see another opportunity here:

Look beyond the aircraft.

Infrastructure inspection, autonomous data collection, computer vision, AI at the edge and robotics are increasingly becoming parts of the same technology ecosystem.

And sometimes the most valuable room for a drone professional to enter isn’t filled exclusively with drone professionals.

Another aerial mission completed.

This project took Open Sky Imageries above a local school to capture professional aerial imagery that provides a perspective you simply can’t get from the ground.

Whether it’s a school, commercial property, construction site, or real estate development, aerial imagery can showcase the entire property, surrounding environment, access points, facilities, and overall footprint in a single visual story.

Every flight has a purpose. The goal isn’t simply to put a drone in the air—it’s to understand what the client needs and capture imagery that delivers.

“Sky Trapper II… Cleared for Landing.”

This footage means a little more today than it did when I edited it.

The video opens with Sky Trapper II returning safely after completing a construction progress mission. What the video doesn’t show is what happened just moments earlier.

Shortly after sunrise, Sky Trapper III was attacked by a bird while operating at approximately 350 feet AGL over the project site. The strike disabled one of the propellers, resulting in an unrecoverable crash. It was difficult to watch one of the most dependable members of the Open Sky Imageries fleet fall from the sky.

Fortunately, we plan for the unexpected. No one was injured, no property was damaged, and our contingency plan was immediately put into action. Sky Trapper II launched, completed the remaining mission, and delivered exactly what the client expected.

Equipment can be replaced. People cannot.

Today’s mission was a reminder that professional drone operations aren’t just about flying—they’re about preparation, redundancy, risk management, and always delivering for the client.
