I recently took a bird photography tour with Cynthia Rand (Facebook https://www.facebook.com/cynthia.c.rand) to view baby birds. I have taken several tours with Cynthia and this one is my favorite. The featured babies were these pileated woodpeckers (located off Cape Ann). I was asked to hold off posting these until the babies had fledged but here you go with their feeding along with a number of other bird encounters of a very full day. I got to photograph a scarlet tanager which I had never seen and was on my list! The black crown night herons are a favorite to watch as well. Thank you Cynthia for a wonderful adventure!

We were recently visited by a doe and her fawn who spent about an hour exploring the marsh area behind our apartment. It was interesting to watch their interactions as it seemed the fawn seemed to sometimes be imitating its mother. I felt I was watching life lessons in progress. Apparently the pair got a bit too close to a bird nesting area because we also observed the birds attacking the doe as if to chase them away. A little peak into Mother Nature at work.

We went to Parker River Wildlife Refuge recently for the first time in quite a while. It was a treat to see so many of our bird friends there. I'd been feeling a little rusty with the camera lately and this excursion really helped. And I learned what an Eastern Kingbird is!

We experienced a very rare whale encounter today on the Cape Ann Whale Watch. 6 humpback whales abandoned their feeding to play “Hide and Seek” with our boat. They seemed very curious…popping up to check us out and then swimming under the boat to entertain the other side of the boat. This went on for nearly an hour. The entire crew was entranced and somewhat flabbergasted. As we were.

We recently took an Amtrak vacation and it included time in Pigeon Forge TN. We spent most of the time in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which has been on my bucket list for a while. It was about 85 most of the time and there was a huge car show in town so that gave Jim something to gawk at. I was gawking at some of what you see below. We had a close encounter with a young bull elk as he emerged from the forest and entered a visitors' area parking lot along with a female and calf. There were also hundreds of butterflies darting around especially near water. This post features the Great Smoky Mountains portion of the trip.

Spring migration is fully underway so we went looking for our bird friends at Parker River a few days ago. We are delighted to welcome back the egrets and the swans in particular. The swan pair was especially fascinating to observe.

I needed to see some pretty, colorful flowers to brighten up a grey spring day so we traveled to the New England Botanic Gardens at Tower Hill to catch the end of the “Elevated” orchid exhibit. Now you don’t have to make the 90minute drive because the exhibit ends this weekend. BUT you get to see some of the gorgeous orchids on exhibit. It was actually a pretty easy drive and I could be tempted to return when spring has truly sprung.

Our adventure today north to Salisbury Beach Reservation reminded us that spring is definitely on the horizon. We found a gorgeous Long Eared Owl at Salisbury. I was having some trouble spotting it even with another photographer's help, but Jim found him with his fancy schmancy binoculars. It was a GREAT find! On the way back, I saw my first Great Blue Heron of the season. There were a pair but I only captured one as you see here.

Our adventure today included a young eagle harassed by seagulls and TWO Long Eared Owls! Woot Woot. I think this might be the same young eagle we saw on the boat ramp recently. Only one of the owls was in full view but the other one sure has a handsome belly.
