New Release: "Lovely Lauterbrunnen"

My first trip to Europe back in 2009 was concentrated almost soley in Switzlerland. Lauterbrunnen was one of my favorite places on that trip and I dreamed of heading back there for years. Back in 2023, I finally made the trek back over there as part of a longer Europe roadtrip through 9 countries in 18 days. The place was as beautiful as ever. Lauterbrunnen is in a very deep U-shaped valley reminiscent of Yosemite Valley. Waterfalls pour off the edge all over. The one pictured here is the famous Staubbach Falls. Other villages such as Murren and Wengen sit perched on the edges of the cliffs overlook the valley from above. Grindelwald is in the next valley over and the famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains dominate the landscape in that valley. This area is truly a paradise. In fact, it's said a young JRR Tolkien traveled here as a teenager and Rivendell from Lord of the Rings was inspired by this valley.

Hopefully you enjoy this scene. It took me a bit longer to process it due to the crazy dynamic range of light going on. I created both a landscape format and a vertical format.

New release: "Moody Dolomites"

A bit of a departure from yesterday's winter scene here in Kansas, this is one I'm pulling from my 2023 trip to Europe. This was a location I really hoped to get some good shots from. Most were dull and the light just never worked out on many of them, but I had marked this one to go back to at some point. I'm glad I did. It was very moody, with little sunlight, but the post sunset glow gave a purple-ish tint to everything. This area is known as the Val di Funes and has some of the most remarkable old churches set in below the jagged Odle peaks. The church pictured here is known as St. Magdalena and was built around the end of the 15th century.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! I hope to be back with a new blog article on some of my Europe adventures early next week!

New release: "1909"

Tonight's drive out to this historic barn in the southwest area of Wichita yielded a beautiful scene. Wading through the 2-3 foot snow drifts to get this as the snow was falling all around was a fun little adventure. This old barn was built in 1909. I'll have to do a little more research on it's history, but it sure made for a beautiful winter scene! I got there a bit late, as the roads were pretty slick, so I had to up the ISO to get the moving snow effect over the red of the barn, but I feel like it was worth it. Tonight's wet and heavy snow is far more preferable to the cold blowing dry snow from earlier in the week. With a still wind, it's just so peaceful!

"Kansas Winter Sunset"

What a day or so we've had in Kansas with this winter storm! From being woken up at 2am to crazy lightning/thunder while heavy freezing rain pelted the house to the blizzard conditions today, it was a crazy winter storm. And I know Kansas City and other areas had it even worse. This evening, I drove down the roads near my house (it's nice to finally have 4WD) to photograph a few winter scenes as the storm cleared this evening. We ended up with a beautiful sunset - if windy!

The two best shots came from this location. I photographed at two different focal lengths and cropped the wide angle for a panoramic to show more of the scene. Still not sure which one I like more. I had another location I was very happy with, but I didn't realize the wind had left me with blurry images until I came home. I normally check, but that zero degree temperature with crazy wind and blowing snow hitting me had me running back to the truck pretty quick. But I'm super happy with these two!

Apparently I ordered too many wall calendars for 2025. I still have extras and would like to move them out since they aren't much use after this year. This is probably the only time I will ever do this with my calendars, but I'm temporarily dropping the price down to $12 (basically half price) to get rid of what I have left. Or 3 for $30. The Grand Scenes vs the Intimate Scenes

It's amazing how one evening can yield some fantastic results. This was my first night in Colorado back in October for fall colors. I made a detour to go photographing with a friend up on Capitol Peak. The aspens had lost quite a bit of leaves. If truth be told, the grand scene just didn't have the feel I had hoped. So many trees had dropped their leaves and the clouds just wouldn't move over the peak at sunset for a little color.

But taking out my telephoto lens opened up a whole new world of possibilities! I spent an hour or so just looking at every angle of the mountains before me. And as the sun slipped further and further behind the mountains behind me, the light changed each intimate scene in different ways.

These were some of my favorites! Which is your favorite?

"Autumn Road"

Nothing beats cruising the backroads in the Flint Hills looking for new compositions. This was taken out near east of Alma, Kansas as the sun was close to setting a few weeks back. While the trees certainly add something, the real gem of the Flint Hills in the fall is certainly the grasses, as they turn to golden, brown and orange hues. The way the light plays off the hills is just an amazing experience at sunrise or sunset on a fantastic autumn evening!
