A lot of wedding photography convos frame documentary and editorial as opposite approaches and as absolutes. Real vs posed, or candid vs curated.

I tend to think that a lot of the most meaningful images live somewhere in between. Images that feel real and lived in, while still being intentional and gently guided.

A lot of the imagery people think of as ā€œcandidā€ (especially the kind being shared on Pinterest) is usually wayyy more supported than it appears. A lot of those images still involve awareness and some level of direction, even if the end result still feels totally effortless and natural.

Some moments deserve to unfold completely uninterrupted. Others benefit from a guided / hybrid approach. A huge part of my job is simply learning to read the room. When to step in, when to step back, and (most importantly) how to support moments while considering the people actually living them.

Documentary and editorial arenā€™t conflicting approaches. The overlap is where some of the most beautiful images happen. šŸŖ©
