A little Renaissance Festival photo update! 📸

I’m definitely still taking pictures at the festival this year, but you may notice I’m a little slower getting them edited and posted. Life has been incredibly busy lately, and I’ve also been making a conscious effort to simply take fewer photos while I’m there.

As much as I love capturing all the amazing people, costumes, performances, and moments at the festival, sometimes having a camera in my hand the entire day can start to feel a little too much like work. This year, I’m trying to find a better balance—taking photos when the moment inspires me, but also putting the camera down and actually enjoying my time with all the wonderful people who make the Renaissance Festival such a special place.

And honestly, with so many incredibly talented photographers out there capturing the festival, I know there will be no shortage of amazing images to enjoy!

So the photos are still coming—just maybe a little fewer and a little slower this year.

Last Night’s Lunar Eclipse with the Milky Way!

Having captured a Blood Moon Eclipse a few times now, I was hoping I could do something a little different this time around. Fortunately when I found out that the eclipse was going to take place when it was within a single frame of the Milky Way, I just had to try to make that happen. Usually the Full Moon would wash out many of the stars, but the eclipse drowned out most of its usual brightness.

Also, I do not usually recommend setting up a star tracker on a dock on a lake, but it worked out alright this time.

Classic Grand Marais!

Grand Marais Harbor and Artist’s Point are truly icons of the North Shore of Minnesota. On the evening I captured this, the Lake was extremely calm, giving me near perfect reflections. I personally love how pleasing the arrangement of the sailing boats in the harbor are.

Let the Festival begin!

Today was the first day of the 2026 season of the Minnesota Renaissance Festival! I somehow got there 4 hours before opening, which gave me some time to do photos before the crowds appeared. There is something really special about these grounds, and in the early morning it’s at its best.

NOTE- I take photos for the Festival, and have permission to be on the grounds before opening.

A Golden Evening on Superior.

Last week, we were in Grand Marais for our night sky photography workshop and we decided to catch sunset on Artist’s Point. We could not have asked for better conditions- with the sky a beautiful golden color and the Lake as smooth as glass. The only thing that could have made it more perfect was the Hjørdis sailing out. Oh, that happened too.

Happy World Photography Day!

Whenever I think about how photography has affected my life, I think about all of the amazing experiences I have had because of it. I’ve always wanted to explore, and photography is a great excuse to get out into the world and experience something new. I may not always go home with the perfect shot, but I always have new stories to tell.

This weekend is the beginning of the 2026 season of the Minnesota Renaissance Festival!

Those that know me for my landscape images might be surprised to find out that I truly became serious with photography at the Renaissance Festival. I’ve always loved going- the grounds and the people are magical. I wanted to capture that magic so I started to learn how to use a camera. All these years later and I’m still going at it. If you attend, you might just see me out in the lanes- and if you do, be sure to say hi!

Grand Marais Glow.

It’s hard to not love Artist’s Point in Grand Marais. It’s an incredible collection of interesting landscape features. During sunset a few evenings ago, the view facing the lighthouse seemed to grab a lot of attention- and no wonder it would. However, the view looking the other way was glowing with color. The old Coast Guard station really completed the Northern Minnesota/ Lake Superior feel.

The Hjørdis Sailing into Lake Superior at Sunset!

Thursday evening couldn’t have been much better for our workshop in Grand Marais. Just as the sun began to set, the schooner Hjørdis sailed out of the harbor and into the calm waters of Lake Superior.

The lake was almost perfectly still, and as the Hjørdis passed through the reflection of the sunset, it left a trail of gentle ripples behind. One of those beautiful Lake Superior evenings that we won’t soon forget!

Milky Way Reflections at the Tombolo!

We just finished an amazing Night Sky Photography workshop on the North Shore with some equally amazing people! We were extra blessed to have incredible conditions near Grand Marais on Thursday night! I have many photos from this trip, so stay tuned!
