"Founded a couple years ago by husband and wife duo, Java and Michelle Bradley, Java’s Compost is making it easier for people to waste less. Considering how much garbage gets sent to landfills unnecessarily, there is a big need to make it easier for people to make a different choice.
“We try to get people to do 100 percent of their material and that's what we've been doing at our house for the last couple years,” says Java. “That's been a lot of fun for me to be able to just throw every single item, to my knowledge, that's from chocolate cake to turkey dinners, from Thanksgiving leftovers or anything that is not going to go back in the fridge or that's been in the fridge too long, all of that goes into the compost.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“There's a redemptive piece to it, where you look at it and you see what other people look at as garbage is actually full of living potential. We like to say it's like giving food scraps a second chance at life and I feel like we all need that. I mean, it seems a little corny but I feel like we all kind of need that.”
Java's Compost was started with the help of Rising Tide Capital -a non-profit organization whose mission is to transform lives and communities through entrepreneurship.90 percent of entrepreneurs in the program are minorities, 71 percent are women, and nearly all of them enter the program with full-time employment. In fact, the average entrepreneur at Rising Tide Capital (RTC) is a 40-year-old mother of two earning less than $38,000 per year.

The DC Youth Orchestra opens the door to a world of classical music for kids who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience it, let alone benefit from expert training. Since 1960, the DC Youth Orchestra Program has fostered the musical development of over 50,000 youth. World-class instructors and conductors teach classes and provide musical direction, but more than that, they instill a love for music in the children who participate. Through partnership, these programs are offered at no cost to participating students.

A little throwback to summer 2013 when I did one of my first stories ever for . This is still one of my favorites shots - and it was the beginning of something beautiful because I have been working with and have been privileged to shoot stories for ever since. Six years of working with two of my favorite organizations!

“The book covers rustle playfully as fans spin overhead—the library now a room of color, life and light. Soon thirty pairs of little feet are jumping out of their sandals at the door, racing not running to find their choice for this week’s checkout. •
With kids clustered and chattering, I see so plainly how books bring the world into reach. The transformation here is much more than paint, shelving, and fun with foam cutouts—the spirit of the library has changed: A love for reading has taken root. This has as much to do with what students are reading as how they’re taught to read

Room to Read works with local authors, illustrators and designers to create and publish books that reflect the experience and culture of the children learning to read in their libraries. The stories have lessons from local life and culture, relying on fewer and fewer translations of Western stories about hot dogs and snow.”

Alex Oleson walks with Senator Roy Blunt in between meetings on Capitol Hill. Alex is a rising junior at St Louis University and is part of the 3% of former foster youth who graduate from a four year university. Alex spent his summer interning with Senator Blunt as a part of the Foster Youth Internship Program. During the FYI program Alex had the opportunity to present policy recommendations to both Congress and the White House to improve child welfare policy based on his personal experience.
The Foster Youth Intern congressional briefing is one of my favorite events to attend and photograph each year. Hearing the stories of these resilient young people who spent part of their childhood in the foster care system and listening to their personal recommendations to congress on how it should be improved is just a beautiful representation of democracy. I have yet to make it through a briefing without crying.

Young boys walk to a festival to celebrate the Virgin Mary dressed in their traditional clothing. Their town, Lalibela, is home to ancient rock-cut churches dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, making their remote town a tourist destination.
