Sensitography

Sensitography I photograph oodles of stuff. I love catching you in the act. For as long as I can remember I've loved photography and I've loved theater. I even auditioned once.

But this Facebook site is specifically for my occasional armchair theatre observations and especially for my community theatre photos. I've always had a camera slung around my neck, often to my kids' dismay. And live theater gives me the chills like nothing else. I stunk. But when I retired from my previous life I can't really say I had a grand vision for what Sensitography has become. I didn't re

ally know I'd end up as a photographer for the arts community. Yet now this wonderful scratching of two itches seems like such a natural. This Facebook site and my Sensitography website serve as my salute to west Michigan's live theater community.

Really looking forward to shooting the tech rehearsal of “Petty Crimes.” A great piece of writing in the hands of a stunning cast. Don’t miss this one.

If you have even the slightest interest in live theater, and the slightest interest in what’s going on in our country — the stuff you read and rant about on a daily basis — then you absolutely need to see “Sweat “at Actors’ Theatre. It opens this Thursday night and I shot these dress rehearsal photos earlier this week.

It helps to start with material that won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and received several 2017 Tony nominations including best drama. Then add a cast that is the embodiment of what Actors’ Theatre is all about and you have a rare drama that will leave you thinking about what you’ve seen and talking about it with others for days. "Sweat" is nothing short of a super-charged slow burn.

Seven years ago, “August: Osage County" was the not-to-be missed play at Actors’ Theatre. It was a tough ticket to get. "Sweat" could well be this year‘s AOG. Don't miss out. Call Actors' box office for tickets: (616) 234-3496. atgr.org

The Grand Rapids Community College Players present “Wilderness," a play by Seth Bockley and Anne Hamburger. Set in the Utah desert (the gorgeous set captures all the hues), the play focuses on a program for psychologically disturbed teenagers and young adults that gathers them in the outdoors for days or weeks of group therapeutic treatment to help them come to grips with all manner of emotional and social burdens.

March 28 to 30. General admission $12/adult and $5/GRCC students. Tickets can be purchased at Spectrum Theater or by calling the box office at (616) 234-3946.

Here are some of my favorite rehearsal photos. The drama sheds light on a program for psychologically disturbed teenagers and young adults that gathers them in the outdoors for days or weeks of group therapeutic treatment. But it also speaks to the idea that in contemporary culture, with its often fragmented families and onslaught of social media, kids today are navigating their way to adulthood in a world in which the old signposts have all but been obliterated, and the path has grown thick with thorny emotional underbrush. The result: anxiety, sadness, self-doubt, addiction and various other hard-to-vanquish demons.
See this powerful ensemble production, March 26-28, 8 pm curtain. Tickets are $12 ($5 GRCC student), phone: 616-234-3946.

Actors' theatre previously posted a bunch of my photos. Here are some more to salute this Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Performing May 16-26. Tickets are available www.atgr.org and 616.234.3946. "The Flick" is set in a semi-seedy movie palace in Worcester, Massachusetts and follows three underpaid employees who do the humdrum and tedious labor necessary for keeping it running. The show is a comedy of the mundane. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on screen. With keen insight and a finely-tuned comic eye, "The Flick" is a hilarious and heart-rending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world. Directed by Michelle Urbane

"If/Then,"
Performing February 1-10 at Actors' Theatre: With unforgettable songs and a deeply moving story by the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning creators of "Next to Normal," comes the musical "If/Then." It is a fascinating, ambitious and original new musical.

Elizabeth, a city planner, moves back to New York to restart her life in the city of infinite possibilities. When her carefully designed plans collide with the whims of fate, Elizabeth's life splits into two parallel paths. "If/Then" follows both stories simultaneously, as this modern woman faces the intersection of choice and chance. "If/Then" is a about living in the business of today and all of the possibilities of tomorrow.
