What a year. We are so grateful for all the opportunities we’ve had this in 2025 to do meaningful work that filled us with purpose, challenged us, fed our souls and continued to develop our creativity.

We worked on stories promoting water security in the Rio Grande River and urban conservation in Austin and Dallas. We were deep in the north woods of the UP highlighting efforts to protect Brook Trout habitat. We swam with the Sturgeon in Black River. We shared the stories of leaders in regenerative farming in Michigan. We filmed birdwatching, mountain biking and fly fishing. And in our own communities, we got to highlight tree planting, trail building, turtle conservation and access to the arts.

Thanks to all who believed in Fauna to give us these opportunities and all who follow our work and support our mission. Here’s to a great 2025 and here’s to more in 2026!

There’s something about the Lake Sturgeon that pulls you into its story. A living dinosaur, virtually unchanged for 130 million years, survived a meteor impact and all the challenges Earth could throw its way. But it couldn’t survive the heavy hand of mankind. This is the story of the people who said extinction isn’t inevitable for our beloved dinosaur fish. There’s hope to overcome a 99% loss of Lake Sturgeon in the Great Lakes and it can be seen here. Foresight to protect the values and identity of your community is a valuable, yet fleeting thing. In Raton, New Mexico some decision makers had the foresight to work to protect the wild character of their rural community and form the partnerships needed to invest in the recreational and public health benefits of nature. “New Mexico is the Land of Enchantment for a reason.” The landscape here is awe inspiring and just as valuable to people as it is to the rare plant and animal species that use these properties. In the face of development pressures, climate change and species loss - some places are just better left wild. We are thankful to The Nature Conservancy, the Trust for Public Land and the City of Raton for having the foresight and ability to act to protect these places. And we’re thankful for the platform to be telling these types of stories that spread some much-needed good news for nature. Link to video in Bio.

Many of our natural spaces in the Great Lakes region depended on fire as a way to maintain health and species diversity. As our development reached further into the natural settings and humanity’s relationship with fire changed, people spent decades keeping fire out of the landscape. Today, one of the most important tools in ecological restoration is returning fire to the land through prescribed burning. This work has direct positive impacts on some of the most threatened species in the region. Link to the film in bio.

Estivant Pines is one of Michigan’s finest examples of a protected natural space that has a way of inspiring you beyond words. The feeling you get as you walk through a cathedral of 400 year old White Pines is indescribable, you just have to do it to understand. And we can do this, thanks to several pioneers in Michigan conservation, who refused to let these White Pines go the way of so many others. Link to video in bio.

This is a conservation success story. You have an animal on a crash course with extinction living in the Ouachita National Forest, what can be done? This is a story that shows extinction isn’t an option, that remedies are possible and if you build it, they will come back. The endangered Red-Cockaded Woodpecker inspired a nearly 3 decade commitment to restore the health of the shortleaf pine bluestem ecosystems within the national forest. A comeback was made for the species and the ecosystem, bringing with it a ripple effect of positive outcomes across the landscape.
