The Unruly Shutter

The Unruly Shutter I’m passionate about capturing people as they are—candid, real, and beautifully imperfect.

Behind the shutter, I capture the unfiltered moments that make us human. Inclusion is central to who I am, where all stories and identities are seen and celebrated.

Today was such a super fun day at the GRHS Unified PE Softball Invitational, with students from Grand Rapids, Proctor, Duluth East, Rock Ridge, and Cloquet all coming together to participate.

What made it especially meaningful for me was seeing athletes from so many of the different sports I’ve photographed this year taking time out of their day to help make it such a memorable experience for everyone involved. Watching them cheer each other on, encourage one another, and just genuinely have fun together was something really special to witness.

Inclusion isn’t just something we talk about, it’s something we do. And honestly, it looks pretty great on everyone.

Girls Lacrosse Grand Rapids vs. Brainerd pictures are up and ready to roll!

This was a really fun game to watch and photograph. Both teams battled hard from start to finish, and the energy on the field made this one exciting right up until the final buzzer.

I continue to find track photography mildly terrifying because there are simultaneously: 4 races, a pole vaulter entering low earth orbit, and the sun actively working against me.

My brain basically turns into an overcaffeinated air traffic controller with a camera.

Somehow between the chaos, I accidentally took a few decent photos.

Also, bonus disclaimer: when your cousin is a photographer, apparently you automatically become the cover photo. In fairness, Jake did jump higher than I am tall, which honestly feels rude and impressive at the same time.

The time has officially come for the Grand Rapids H.S. Grand March “A Night in Rio” photos to be released into the wild. ✨

This is hands down one of my favorite events to photograph, not just because everyone looks incredible (which they absolutely do), but because of the pure chaos and creativity our students bring to the stage every single year.
From backflips…to paper-rock-scissors battles…to what can only be described as contraband confetti cannons…you truly never know what’s about to happen next.

And honestly? I am so here for it.

Photo link is in the comments! Photos can be purchased directly through the website. If you need or prefer a different method please reach out directly, I am happy to help. 📸

Please note that previews are low resolution images that include a watermark and added grain. Both will be removed when purchasing the full resolution digital download.

This event was photographed free of charge in support of our school, so please refrain from taking screenshots of the low-resolution previews. Not only are you getting a much lower quality image that way, but purchasing photos directly helps support the time, equipment, and work that goes into covering events like this for our community. ❤️

Unfortunately, it is absolutely impossible to get photos of every single kid due to obstacles like people standing up, groups blocking each other, or couples not stopping on stage. Just know every effort was made on my part to get at least one image of every participant.

Thank you to all the students, families, and organizers for making this event such a blast to capture. Your energy, creativity, and personalities make these photos unforgettable.

Dear Friends,

Going forward, you’ll notice that portions of image previews will be unavailable to view and displayed in lower resolution. Unfortunately, screenshotting photos has become increasingly common. I completely understand the excitement of wanting to save moments of your athletes, dancers, and performers, but it does make it difficult to sustain this work long term.

Photography is so much more than simply showing up with a camera. Behind every gallery are expenses for equipment, software, travel, insurance, editing time, and countless hours dedicated to creating and delivering these memories. Even photographers who occasionally share images “for free” are still personally investing significant time and resources into their work.

This year, I’ve continued photographing games, shows, and events with the only cost being the purchase of the final images themselves. I truly love capturing these moments and being able to give back to teams, schools, yearbooks, and our community whenever possible. But when images are screenshotted instead of purchased, it becomes harder to continue providing this service in a sustainable way.

Because of this, going into next year I’ll likely be making some significant changes to how galleries and event coverage are handled moving forward.

My family and I have sacrificed a great deal of time, energy, and personal resources so I can continue being present at events and documenting these memories for other families. I simply want to be able to keep doing what I love for years to come.
I hope this offers a little perspective, and I genuinely appreciate those who respect and value the work behind every image.

Thank you,
The Unruly Shutter

Interrupting your regularly scheduled Grand March photo watch to bring you a handful from the Middle School Track Meet.

No rhyme, no reason, just pure track-meet chaos in photo form. I learned very quickly that track is basically organized confusion with stopwatches.

Huge thank you to Eric at Frame Up in Grand Rapids for getting me out of a pickle!

The framing is absolutely perfect for this photo, and the quick turnaround to get it where it needed to be was a huge stress relief.

Thank you, thank you!

The rest of you will have to see the photo in person at “Perform”
May 11–July 3 at the Reif Center… we’re gonna sing it again.

The wait is almost over… 👀✨

More sneak peeks from Grand Rapids High School’s Night in Rio Grand March are here 📸

Just enough sparkle, style, and runway magic to keep the hype alive ✨

Give this a share so everyone knows where to find their photos 📸

Well…my first experience with boys lacrosse can mostly be summed up as: what is even happening right now? 😅

Also — was someone actually yelling “Bingo"…or did I just hallucinate that? I need answers.

On the photography side, I quickly realized how spoiled I’ve been these past few months with constant lighting. Chasing the sun again? Not exactly something I missed.

Photos are up! Honestly, I’m excited to watch these improve as I (hopefully) start to understand the game a little more each time.

Grand Rapids vs. Hermantown baseball photos are up and ready to roll! ⚾📸

You might be wondering why I chose this photo for the post… well, I want it publicly known that I was locked in on Hermantown’s shortstop and take absolutely zero responsibility for missing that cool play.

You couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful sky, love the heavy clouds.

Grand Rapids Grand March sneak peeks are here! 👀✨

And yes… I already know what everyone’s wondering... did I catch the backflip?!

You’ll just have to stay tuned to find out. 😉

I hope everyone had an amazing time and made it home safe!

If you need me, I’ll be deep in an editing hole for the foreseeable future… but I gladly accept coffee and snack deliveries as emotional support. ☕🍪

Also… quick heads up: every time I edit at night, morning-me has opinions. 😅 So if anything looks a little questionable, don’t worry. It’ll get a second look with fresh eyes. 😴😴😴

ETA: if you click on the photo and a messenger window pops up, don’t worry about it. It doesn’t actually send me anything.
