SEE, HEAR, SPEAK: NO EVIL
⠀
“See, Hear, Speak: No Evil,” is a photo essay by Photographer Alfield Reeves, inspired by Three Wise Monkeys (Mizaru, Kikazaru, and Iwazaru) sculpture, which represents the Japanese proverb “See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil”, which suggests turning a blind eye, covered ears and silenced voice to wrongdoings.
Utilizing the power of portraiture and the vibrancy & symbol of the American flag, Alfield recreates & expands on the sculpture, working with people as the subjects. Using their hands & the American flag as props, these in-your-face photographs, collectively & individually serve as a metaphor to remind us of our selectivity to be blind, deaf & silent in the midst of discrimination and racial injustice. ⠀
⠀
These multi-layered images also symbolize how American history, structure & culture has hampered black & brown communities from being seen, from being heard and from using their voices. While also reminding us that racism affects everyone.
⠀
“See, Hear, Speak: No Evil,” while being an indictment of our refusals to act, offers the opportunity & space for collective & individual reflection. It is also a reminder that our fight is against racism and how its adaptation has trickled down into every facet of our society. Hopefully leading us to bridging the gaps between one another in a country that is seemingly becoming more & more divided. ⠀
