Last weekend we took a ferry ride to Kingston and explored the beauty of the upper Kitsap Peninsula. I love this area, it feels so rural in the middle of forests, small farms, summer homes, all surrounded by waterways. Our route took us north to Hansville, down Hood Canal Drive, then to Suquamish, Indianola and back to Kingston. It was a special day. The perfect place to reset and enjoy nature's beauty. ⛴️🌲🎂

It's easy to think the stars are moving, but almost all of the motion we see in the night sky comes from Earth rotating beneath them. Satellites are the obvious exception, moving across the sky under their own motion—a reminder of just how much is happening overhead on any given night. When hundreds of images taken over three hours are combined into a timelapse, the stars appear to race across the sky—but it's really our planet doing the spinning.

Eastern Washington was blanketed in thick wildfire smoke from several nearby fires all day, leaving me wondering whether it would even be worth photographing the Milky Way. As darkness fell, the sky appeared to clear somewhat, but the smoke lingered and can be seen drifting across the stars throughout this 20-second timelapse.

There is something so incredibly peaceful about watching the day transition into night. The contrast between those dramatic storm clouds and that vibrant, deep orange horizon is just mesmerizing. I just had to take in the beauty of the moment.

Milky Way over the Columbia River

Wanapum Lake is a reservoir on the Columbia River that was created from Wanapum Dam to the south. This was taken, looking due south, from the parking lot of Wild Horses Monument just off I-90, east of the Vantage Bridge. The landscape is stunning. There's so much geologic history here.

I've always wanted to capture the Milky Way to include the actual "ponies" monument but it's a steep half-mile uphill slog to reach. So, I've been putting off the hour and a half drive to that location (under the conditions needed to capture the milky way). Someday I’ll make it work!

Another peaceful night under the cosmic highway 🌌 ✨️

I am so thankful the sky cleared up last night. The forecast proved true! All it took for me to head out was a short break in the clouds late Thursday night between 10pm and 2am this morning. If the weather cooperates I plan to make the most of this new moon cycle.

Anyone else exhausted by this latest storm? 🌬️ We definitely had a doozy over the last two days. While I don't mind the rain—it does a fantastic job clearing dust out of the air—the wind gusts really wreaked havoc on the yard. Branches down, leaves everywhere, and the local wildlife stayed huddled up all day.

I’m so ready to get our sunny weather back. It's been incredibly fickle, but I’ve got my fingers crossed that it clears out by midnight tonight. I've had a shoot planned for this since the last new moon, and I'd love to finally get those clear, dark skies. 🌌🤞

The western sky was quite dramatic in the late afternoon yesterday. The Virga clouds and crepuscular rays, all in one scene, looked spectacular. The gap allowing a pool of sunlight to break through makes the landscape look magical.

Everything aligned for shooting the Milky Way on this night. It included a new moon (dark sky) and no clouds to interfere. Perfect! This image is the second POV from my original taken the same night. The exposures for this scene were taken between 4:30 and 5:15am. I had to rush through the shots, not only because the light was changing so fast but the temperatures had dropped into the mid 20's and my fingers could no longer feel the buttons on my camera 🥶
