A twelve-spotted skimmer dragonfly taking a well-deserved rest. Did you know that adult dragonflies can eat up to 100 mosquitoes a day? I'm always glad to see them for this reason and many others!

"Who took my tail?!"

This male cardinal is clearly missing his beautiful red tail. From what I have read this is most likely the result of a "fright molt" also known as a "stress molt" or "shock molt". During a fright molt, all the tail feather are ejected, leaving the bird tail-less. The cardinal is still able to fly and go about its necessary tasks, and will regrow the tail feathers in 4 to 6 weeks. This ability to eject the tail feathers allows a bird to escape a predator - can you imagine the look on the other animal's face when it ends up with a mouth full of feathers? Not a bad survival strategy!

Prairie phlox ~

These were seen at Crex Meadows, but I am now growing them in our yard too. My plant collection just grows and grows...each year I say I'm going to buy less, then I see something I just have to have! I love buying plants from local garden club sales. They have the most unique choices and great prices too. I may have just been at one today - I stopped "just to look"!
