One of my greatest passions in life is photography and using it to capture the beauty that surrounds us. My primary interest is nature photography, though, I have also photographed newborns, children, families, and done senior photo shoots. Here are three Snowy Owls I photographed in Michigan this week. The first two images are the same bird, while the following two images are different birds.

Notice the variation in the markings in their plumage. Young birds and females have more black and brown barring, while older males have the least amount. Check out just how white that last bird on the post is.

The Northern Lights went on display last night, but it was too cloudy initially to see much. Around 10pm, it was much clearer when the color intensified again.

Depending on the timing of the geomagnetic storm today, tonight's event has the potential to be even more impressive, as long as things don't happen too early during the daylight.

I haven’t posted here in a while, but let’s change that—with a visit from a local celebrity. A birding friend of mine recently spotted a Tricolored Heron at the Hebron Fish Hatchery. This species is much smaller than our familiar Great Blue Herons and typically ranges along the southeastern U.S. coast and the Gulf of Mexico. So, seeing one in Ohio is rare. Seeing one in my own home county? Even rarer.

As such, I’ve made several trips to see it: the night it was first reported, the following morning for better light and photos, and again a few days later when Trek wanted to get photos of his own. It’s incredible that the bird has stuck around for over a week—though it makes sense, given the easy food supply. After all, it's hanging out at ponds where fish are literally being raised.

At the end of these photos, I’ve included a range map so you can see just how far this visitor is from its usual range.

Just snagged a photo of these beauties 15 minutes ago in an ag field near the Intermediate School here in Granville. As is typically the case this time of year, the buck wasn’t going anywhere unless his lady friend went first.

When Trek said, “Deer!” from the back seat of the truck, I started to look for them. When he said, “Oh, a buck!” I immediately started to brake. 😆 From where the truck came to a stop, the deer were lined up too much—they blended together for what made a weird image. I moved the truck forward just a few feet to compose this shot, which I like much more.

Yesterday morning, I learned that the chances of seeing the Northern Lights were going to be relatively high that night … at least about as high as possible for here in central Ohio. The last time this happened, I had no idea and woke up to all kinds of amazing photos in my Facebook feed. Not wanting that to happen again, the family and I went to the Land Lab to see what would unfold.

As soon as the sun was down, we could see faint colors in the northern sky, and the camera was picking them up even better. Denali was getting tired and cranky, so she and Andrea headed home and Trek decided to make it a late night with me.

A couple of hours later, around 10:05 pm, I was absolutely in awe. It was reminiscent of watching the eclipse earlier in the year—standing there not believing what I was experiencing. Trek had bundled up and fallen asleep by this point, but I woke him up to see it. He was a bit disoriented—it’s not often you wake up outside on the dry mud of the edges of a wetland—but was quickly taking pictures alongside me.

Here are a few shots I was able to capture when things got especially colorful.

This is probably the final eclipse photo I'll share here, but we'll see. I like how this one shows the prominences so well. Originally, I assumed these pinkish things were solar flares, but I read up on them some more, and they're prominences. Apparently, solar flares shoot out from the sun, while prominences shoot out and arc back. See that one at the bottom? I also read that its diameter was 3x bigger than Earth's diameter. Think about that for a moment, and consider what that means for how big the sun is. Absolutely mindboggling.

A few of you asked that I let you know when my eclipse photos would be available for sale. You can click the link here and scroll to the very bottom of this gallery to find them. The order will be completed through the website and shipped to the address you provide.

Yesterday morning, Denali and I were on a walk at a local wetlands when she ran ahead a few yards down the trail. As she did, an American Bittern flushed from beside the trail, flew over it, and dropped down in a large patch of reeds nearby.

I texted a couple of birding friends about it because it’s a very difficult species to find in our county. My buddy, Matt, was birding another location not far away and came over. I waited for him to join us, not wanting to accidentally flush the bird again before he got there, and we started looking for it again. Bitterns blend in well and have a tendency to bury themselves so I was ecstatic when Matt exclaimed, “There it is!”

Sure enough, and here it is.

Experiencing the total eclipse yesterday was absolutely incredible. We spent the day at my parents’ house where my dad and I photographed the process for a couple of hours. During the few minutes of totality, when daylight went dark, we heard Barred Owls start singing and Trek even saw one fly into the woods nearby.

This ended up being one of my favorite shots from the day. If you zoom in, you can even see some solar flares at about the six and four o’clock positions.
