I walked into my first year of teaching in 2013 to a classroom full of freshmen. This little sassy girl was in that room, and I actually thought for the longest time that she didn’t like me. I then learned that she just has a very sarcastic way of expressing love 🤣 She was one of the first to accidentally call me “mom,” but then continued to call me mom on purpose her whole high school career. We developed a relationship that I couldn’t ever think to ask for when becoming a teacher. She set the bar high and had me thinking every student was going to be like her. She came to me senior year telling me she was going to Kent to be a nurse, but when she said it, there was no excitement or passion in her eyes. After a lot of encouraging, important talks, she decided to follow her heart and pursue a career that she could utilize her strengths and talents, and is graduating today with an art education degree. I’ve held a lot of titles with this girl- teacher, mentor, counselor, mom, friend, and now I’m about to become her colleague. I am so proud of the person she has become and I am so excited to be there every step of the way 💕
