Every one of these images was taken before Gabby and Brian's ceremony. This was their "getting ready" time. ⁠
⁠
I prefer to think of it as "prep and connect" (but I'm still workshopping that 😅).⁠
⁠
Yes you're getting ready, but that's not the primary story. ⁠
⁠
What's happening all around your time of preparation is connection. It's deeply personal time with the people you love, those closest family and friends who have always rooted for you, supported you, held you, comforted you. ⁠

During this time I'm watching for images that show those kinds of stories. ⁠

Those are stories you'll want to remember 50 years from now.⁠

Those are just a few sentiments John and Jenna expressed at their reveal celebration. As I unveiled their images to them in person the memories started pouring back in.⁠

The first dance with his mom where he could see exactly how much she loves him.⁠
⁠
The memories with her Dad throughout the day, seeing how tender and proud he was of her.⁠
⁠
The little side stories that they never even saw on the day but get to experience now.⁠

"You know what is great?
Nothing stays the same."

That Bon Iver line always hits me. We want things to stay the same, humans on average don't like change. Change is hard. But imagine life without change.

Without change we will never witness beauty. Without change, seeds won't grow into trees, flowers never bloom, babies never grow old enough to tell you they love you.

Weddings are the epitome of change. Two families being made one wholly new entity. What a gift that life didn't stay the same.

Decades from now, we'll have all gone through changes. Life will be hard and beautiful too many times to count. In the midst of change it's hard to notice what's actually happening. In the moment it's slow.

In my thirties, I already love looking back, a year, ten years, twenty. Time has passed, making the change that was difficult to notice now plainly obvious. My kids aren't babies anymore. My hairline isn't sitting quite where it used to sit. Some friends aren't on earth anymore.

When I give my couples their wedding albums, I'm handing them a window into the change that will come. That window becomes a frame you'll want to look through more and more as time beautifully moves on.

"Oh, how everything can change
In such a small time frame
You can be remade
You can live again
What was pain now's gained
A new path gets laid
And you know what is great?
Nothing stays the same"

They expressed their joy in a way that made you feel so appreciated and loved. ⁠

With each other, with their friends, their family, laughter and smiles were always right around the corner.⁠

This isn't meant to feel like pressure to act a way you're not. If big laughs are you, that's OK! ⁠

What I'm saying here is don't be afraid to react the way you're feeling. Be yourself, feel the emotions and let them out! Your other half wants to see the real you.⁠

Think back with me.

In the last 10 years, how often have you looked back through your camera roll? How often have you dug through your hard drives just to go down memory lane?

I know for me that the answer isn't often.

It's gotten me thinking, what's more important.
Would you rather have thousands and thousands of images that show everything but are hard to find...

OR a small, carefully curated set of images that tells your story well and you stumble upon often?

Obviously it's a simple answer, and yet in our digital age I feel a pull to have everything possible. Hold on to every image, every note, every text, every email.

What are we gaining by this?

But you know what I have looked back on? The physical things.

The handwritten cards. The journals. The notebooks. The images I've printed.

The photographs on our walls and in our albums are what I treasure most. Those won’t be forgotten.

They are tangible and powerful reminders of what mattered most in the time they were taken.

We often sift through piles of media to find what matters most to us.

This is true in movies, music, friendships, food preferences, literature, travel destinations, and in my work — wedding photography.

I cull out a LOT of images. Usually only 10% of the images from a wedding survive the first pass.

It's not about having everything. Everything is far too much.

When cameras promise to not let you miss anything, curation becomes a superpower.

Each image becomes more powerful when I eliminate the distractions around it.

Decisions, slowness, carefully carving away. This curation brings life into focus.

What's left is your story.

Don't be afraid to throw things away.

Don't be afraid to commit to the images and stories that will remind you of what actually matters.

You're sealing the deal, marking your commitment with "an unbroken circle" (I hear that at nearly every wedding 😅).⁠

There is something special about a ring. It's all your own, given to you by one person, the most important human you'll ever know. Your best friend, your love, your forever adventure buddy, your joy, your home.⁠

I remember as a kid seeing a small section of wall space in my grandparents dining room.

Hanging vertically together were the big family group photos, one from each of their three children’s weddings.

They weren’t just keepsakes, they were markers of history and the legacy of my family.

I think this is one reason I love a good family portrait.

Rows of people, years of memories, lifetimes of history all crashing together.

Those are classic images, leaving us teary eyed decades later as people and times change, yet we remember why it all matters.

But sometimes I feel a tension from my couples.

They want these classic images, but they don't want the experience they've had at other weddings.

You know the one...

The one where it takes way too long, all while your food, drink, and people are waiting.

Much of this tension starts from pressure to get every possible family iteration.

This is where I step in to craft a family portrait time that is intentional but doesn't overdo it.

It begins in the planning stages by helping you consider what is most important.

Then on your wedding day my focus shifts slightly from purely noticing and documenting moments to artfully crafting.

I guide you and your family to quickly and efficiently make portraits that will bring you back to the people that mattered most.
