I’ve seen a LOT of conversation lately within the photography community about no longer sharing images of babies and children because of concerns surrounding AI and the ability to manipulate innocent photographs into sexually explicit content.
First, I want to say this: I completely understand the concern. The technology is disturbing, and the misuse of AI to exploit children is something we should all take seriously. There are real cases happening, and I absolutely believe we should be paying attention to what is happening and advocating for stronger protections for children. Here is the thing: what is happening is that these perverts are writing a narrative to create these videos/stories and AI is grabbing faces/similar to those are literally ANYWHERE on the internet. This is going back to faces of children from the 1800s to current day. I mean - it can happen to ANYONE. That's CRAZY.
Photographers aren't the bad guy; the folks ALLOWING this to be OK are the problem - and we all need to take a stand against them.
That said, I also want to be transparent about where I stand as a photographer.
I will continue sharing images of the beautiful babies and children I photograph as I always have; with parent consent.
I don’t believe the answer to what criminals are doing with technology should be to stop celebrating childhood, stop displaying beautiful photography, or allow fear to dictate what we create.
I also don’t believe there is one “right” answer for every photographer.
If another photographer has decided that they will no longer share images of children publicly, I respect that decision completely. Every photographer has to decide what feels right for their business and their clients.
For me, however, the decision ultimately belongs to my clients.
If you are comfortable with me sharing your baby’s images, I will continue to proudly showcase them. If you would prefer that I keep your images completely private, I will respect that without question.
Your child. Your choice. ❤️
I also want to be careful about the information being shared online right now. There is a lot of fear surrounding a “new law” and what photographers can or cannot legally post and a lot of misinformation being spread around. The actual legal landscape surrounding AI-generated sexual content involving minors is much more complicated than some of the social media posts make it sound.
What isn’t complicated is this:
Children deserve protection. Parents deserve informed choices. And photographers deserve the ability to make responsible decisions for their own businesses.
I will continue to create beautiful, innocent images of childhood—and I will continue to respect the wishes of every family who trusts me with their memories. ❤️
