One thing most people don’t realize about pottery... clay shrinks. A lot.

As it dries and goes through the kiln, most clay shrinks around 10-15% or more. I often remind myself that when all is said and done, I can usually assume the finished piece will fit *inside* the freshly thrown one. It’s a pretty wild transformation.

Shrink rate is something potters are constantly thinking about. Everything has to be made larger than the final size we’re aiming for. And honestly, even after making pottery for years, it can still be a little surprising to open the kiln and see just how much everything has changed.

So if you’re wondering why it’s hard to find a 24oz handmade mug… this is a factor. 😆

Every September, Indie Craft Parade l Makers Collective is one of those weekends I look forward to most.

I’ve been going to Indie Craft every year since my freshman year of college. Back then, I walked the aisles feeling inspired by the incredible artists and makers, never thinking that one day I’d get to be part of it too.

Getting to go back this year as a vendor feels like such a full-circle moment. Indie has become more than just a market to me. It’s a reminder of how much can grow over time - not only as an artist, but as a community. Every year brings new faces, familiar friends, and so many people who believe in supporting handmade work and the people behind it.

Lately I’ve been feeling equal parts overwhelmed and incredibly grateful. This season has been full in the best way, and it’s such a gift to be in a place where I get to pour so much of my time and energy into my own work.

I’m so excited to share my new collection of work with you September 11-13th. & I’ve also got another really exciting event coming up this fall that I can’t announce just yet... Can’t wait to share more soon. 🤍
