India Day 2017

Here are a few of the memories I took from India Day yesterday. Enjoy these reminders of this local biannual event. The spirit of Ganesha was everywhere.

The full set of photos can be found on my site:

This year’s India Day in Greenville was a festival of dance. There were regional, classical, and modern Bollywood-style performances from a wide variety of local groups and artists. Period costumes with blasts of color. Music to match, and some was live. All day long. Lots of children, teens, and young adult performers. Proud parents with their cellphone cameras at the ready.

A small collection of regional and national exhibits. Check out the textile peacock…

India started the first university, in 700 BC. Being a lifelong nerd, I was aware of the many Nobel winners and tech Innovators. I did learn a set of rediscovered 2000-year-old Vedic formulas to speed multiplication.

Oh, yes. And there was a sampling of the incredibly diverse Indian cuisine. I need to get back to Saffron’s! Did you know that turmeric is an anti-microbial?

Love the people, love the culture, love the music, love the food. Too bad I have to wait two years for the next event here. Oh, wait…I can travel. What a concept! It’s a big beautiful world out there.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” - Samuel Clemmons (i.e., Mark Twain)

Greenville's India Day is Tomorrow - 8/26/2017

I really enjoyed India day two years ago. Having been to this great land a few times, meeting and working with the people, enjoying the culture and food, I have gained an affinity for all things Indian. Since this local festival is only once every two years, I have waited long enough!

Don't miss it. To whet your appetite, here are some images from the previous event.

Rally to Remove a Sculpture in Downtown Greenville

The Greenville News reported today that one of the sculptures that I have displayed on my site is the subject of a removal rally on Saturday, 26 August, at 1 PM. I walked by it last week, and thought I could see this coming...

Can you guess which one?

My Eclipse 2017

There is nothing in the world like the spectacle of totality. The sky slowly, but with increasing speed, dims. Not at all like dusk, but with a special character of light that begs description. Like a haze that you can actually see. Suddenly a Diamond Ring, then Bailey's Beads. Then it happens, and is felt and heard as well as seen. Totality.

Simply, and amazingly, beautiful.

No single photograph ever does it justice, but they serve to remind of the experience. The corona is a difficult beast to tame. In fact, to properly capture the sun's corona, a sequence of pictures, at different exposures must be taken, then merged together. Two cameras are better, and at higher magnifications. No do-overs. NASA does it best.

Fortunate to live within the shadow path, I scouted mountain tops and lakesides in advance. Ultimately I chose to be with people, sharing in the joy of this moment. So, here are a few shots, to revel in the glory of the cosmos.

Artisphere 2017 - Another Great Event in Greenville

This event is for anyone that appreciates art in its many forms - music, performance, graphics, materials. Art being creeated in real-time, with metal, grass, wood, paper... A painting of Audrey Hepburn developing before our eyes. Interactive STEAM exhibits, and other learning/playing opportunities. Living sculpture - it's fun to get them to laugh. Of course, local food & drink, and artworks to peruse and purchase.

Well Done Greenville!

I posted a couple pictures here. If you want to view the full set, click on over to my site - https://smithwarephoto.com

Where in Greenville? Paved Paradise, and Put Up a Parking Lot.

About a year ago, i was in the West End, and took a few shots of this nice church and its steeple. After the West End Roasters finally opened up its retail shop last Fall (Milano Espresso for me), the wrecking ball and bulldozers came to change this into a few hundred apartments. Now the view is actually a multistory parking lot. The church must have received an offer they could not refuse. Que Joni Mitchell and her Big Yellow Taxi...

Where in Greenville? Which view do you prefer?

Here are two photos of a building in Greenville's downtown, taken a year apart. One as the architect intended, and which the city planners approved. The second view is more technological, don't you think? While I appreciate a strong wireless signal as much as the next textophile, whose idea was it to put a cell tower in full view of the city's main cultural center? What were you thinking, people, or were you thinking at all?

As I keep tabs on the changes that growth brings to our beautiful town, you can follow them here, and on my site: http://smithwarephoto.com
