Haven’t posted in over a year, here is why:
Just over a year ago, I lost two of my best friends, Gus and Lilly. Some of you know them, the basset hounds. Gus was 12 and died of an aggressive form of throat cancer. His mom, Lilly, died a week later of a combination of lung cancer and the loss of Gus. I had almost given up. Lilly was always there when I got home from Army adventures and Gus was Rachel and my first dog together.
After that I realized how much time was taken from them by worrying about my analytics, shadow bans, algorithms, likes, comments and all the bu****it that goes with social media. Well, f**k social media. I started working on my truck again, trapping cats in the neighborhood to either get them fixed, vaccinated and released or to find them good homes. Then we moved…keeping two of the cats of course, Penny and Potato.
I moved to the mountains of NC, lost 40 lbs, joined the Fire Dept and MSAR team. We’ve met some of the best and genuinely nicest people in our lives here. We cut ties with those who don’t matter, condensed our tribe, and left behind drama. We are doing our best to immerse and adapt to Appalachia.
We got a new dog, Rochambeau, or Beau for short and finally after 12 years, Rachel and I got married.
Once I realized how much bu****it was in my head and how much it truly didn’t matter, I began flushing it out. What’s going on in Palestine, Ukraine, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, none of that is here on my hill, I can’t control that. I have no say in what parents do to their kids, what hormones they force feed them, what books are read in some school in New York. I don’t control the narrative being played out in Washington or on some p**o island. What I can do is give my family my time, improve my house, or help my department in their operations. In doing so my life has completely changed for the better!
If you find yourself reading this, and you’re struggling, ask yourself; is the current path you’re on problematic? Why are you there? Don’t let anyone be a detriment to your tribe. None of this social media s**t is real,but life is!
