This young female turtle was looking for a place to start laying her eggs and decided to rest right beside the edge of the footpath before heading deeper into the woods in her journey to find a place to nest. She’s clearly been enjoying a meal of something too, look at that messy face. There is always something excellent to see at Conestee Nature Preserve

This is the Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus) although uncommon can be found all throughout North America. The yellow ring around their eyes really are quite fantastic. They are generally quite shy so I was really pleased to watch this surprisingly large fellow pose for quite some time while resting amongst the leaves.

This was my first time encountering a Luna Moth, and I was so very glad to have my macro lens along with me at the time. The detail in their antennae is simply astonishing.

Although they eat copious amounts in their caterpillar form the winged adults cannot eat, surviving on the food they ate as caterpillars, meaning these beautiful creatures only live for about 7 days.
