People see the final portrait and often think they’re paying for an hour with a camera, but what they don’t see is everything that exists behind that hour. The studio overhead, subscriptions, editing software, backup systems, props, wardrobe, constant education, insurance, artwork samples, employees, assistants, associates, booking manager, marketing team, and hair and makeup artists that all play a role in creating the experience from start to finish. Luxury portraiture has never been about simply taking photos to me. It’s about creating something intentional that your family will still have long after the moment itself is gone. Every image represents years of investment, artistry, time, and work most people never see behind the scenes. And to the photographers reading this, especially the ones constantly underpricing themselves trying to survive in this industry, I hope you realize you are not “charging too much” for wanting to make a living from your craft. Most people only see the hour you’re holding the camera, but they don’t see the years it took to learn lighting, posing, editing, client communication, marketing, sales, retouching, color theory, newborn safety, business management, or the thousands upon thousands invested just to stay operational. Underpricing may fill your calendar temporarily, but long term it leads to burnout, resentment, and talented artists leaving the industry entirely. Stop apologizing for building something valuable. 🤍
