Luke, the Leucistic Loon Chick
I feel truly blessed to have been recently given this EXTREAMLY RARE opportunity to photograph this incredibly RARE and UNIQUE animal. To my knowledge this is the 3rd or 4th documented case of this in the wild.
Leucism is a genetic condition that causes a reduction in all types of pigments, not only melanin. As a result, leucistic animals have pale or white patches of fur/hair, skin, plumage, scales, or cuticles. However, the condition doesn’t affect the eyes, so they look normal. A leucistic bird, for example, might have a few white or pale feathers. But since the bird still produces some melanin, the rest of their plumage and eyes look as they would without the genetic mutation.
Luke will be a SPOTLIGHT at my upcoming art show tomorrow Saturday 8/22 at the Carpenter Nature Center in Hudson Wisconsin.

Sometimes in life there are moments that are just meant to be! I have really been struggling with some personal issues as of late. It has definitely taken me away from my own natural therapy (photographing wildlife) which is why I have been somewhat absent from posting lately. For those who reached out wondering why they haven't seen my photos recently, thank you for your concerns and kind words.
