Something is happening in Facebook groups across the internet that we need to talk about. Parents are posting our photos and asking strangers to remove the 207 Photo watermark for them. And other people, who either don't know or don't care, are doing it. Sometimes within minutes. Whole comment threads of "here you go!" with the edited file attached.
Here's what's actually happening when that exchange takes place. The person asking is committing copyright infringement. The person editing is committing copyright infringement. Federal law, not our opinion. Those photos are our property, licensed to families through purchase, and altering them to strip our branding is illegal.
We're working really hard not to raise prices this year. We haven't, and we don't want to. But every stolen photo shifts that cost onto the families who do the right thing and place an order. Being ethical shouldn't be made more expensive because of theft, but that's the direction this is heading.
I’m going to be really honest, I’m running out of patience and grace. When I was a kid, stores would hang pictures of shoplifters by the register. These days they post them on Facebook so the community can help identify them. Copyright theft is harder to prosecute than shoplifting, but the principle is the same. So from here on out, when we catch someone asking for our watermarks to be removed, or someone editing them out, we're going to start posting about it. Names and screenshots. Same as the grocery store down the street.
To be clear, we'll always blur the kid's face. They didn't do anything wrong. This is about the adults making the choice. If you love a photo, please purchase it. The digital download comes without a watermark because that's how this is supposed to work. - JM
