Toronto PCC car: A common sight in the summer of 1973 was Toronto, Ontario's PCC cars. They were the largest owner of them with 745 on the roster. They had many configurations and features. Some were able to operate in multiple unit sets. They dominated the city for many years but were phased out by 1995. Still the TTC has 2 restored versions it keeps for special events. Here we see one of the many PCC cars passing the Edgewater Hotel located at Roncesvalles and Queensway streets. Today it still stands as a Days Inn. (Sid Lewis)

The first one: Norfolk Southern SD90/43MAC #7299 has a very familiar and some would say a glimpse of the future. It is seen at NS's Juniata shops August 9, 2015 being prepped for the SD70ACu program. It was the first one to be converted. The program to upgrade them had mixed results and after a few years many were sold off. NS 7299 was sold to Progress Rail, then later Ferromex. It was former UP 8071 and for a while UP 3533 before being sold to NS.

GE's first BEL switcher? A lot can be said about this locomotive, and yes it is a locomotive! The "8808" was built in 2016 with the cab of Norfolk Southern C40-9 #8808 when the unit came in for modernization. The idea was designed by GE engineers as a switcher that ran off of storage batteries specifically designed for moving foreign locomotives around the plant. It was designed with the Indian Railways order in mind. It had a standard coupler on one end and a foreign hook type at the other. The cab and truck were recycled. It also has hand brakes at both ends and a new frame. It was never observed being used under its own power but as a buffer car between locomotives for short moves. Kept a building 60 it was rarely seen until now.

Waiting its turn: CSX CW44AH #466 sits outside the East Erie Commercial shop in Lawrence Park, Pa on September 10, 2026. It was just cleaned out in preparation to be modernized at Wabtec, Erie. Next step is the tear down process. It will be completed around the end of the year as a modernized CM44AH.

The very first: On June 8, 2017 the very first Indian Railways ES43ACmi #49000 tested on the GE test track. Normally broad gauge it was retrucked with standard gauge trucks for testing in the US. This unit was significant in may ways as it would become the new face of Indian Railways displacing older ALCO and EMD designs. 1000 GE built locomotives were ordered with only the first 50 being built in the US.

Put to work: Southern Pacific B36-7 #7759 leads a local at Lawrence Park, Pa. The #7759 was one of 16 B36-7s built in November 1984. Here it was just released from GE and Conrail, which was notorious for doing so, put it to work on one of its trains. The B36-7s were a small group on a large roster. This one was also part of a 5 unit group to feature a few add on extras including a horn on the back of the long hood. It lasted into the Union Pacific merger but due to being a minority locomotive they were quickly put on the block for sale. Eventually it went to NREX and then to EFVM in Brazil as a BB36-7 #747.
