Peek-a-boo!

I braved the traffic on the loop road of Cades Cove last night - and actually, it really wasn't that bad - to play with my new 200-800mm lens for wildlife photography. PEOPLE and PETS photography is my business; WILDLIFE photography is becoming my new hobby.

Just past the John Oliver cabin is a large walnut tree and two bears were chomping away beneath it. The grass is lush, tall, and thick in the Cove so bears can be hard to spot. Fortunately, this one stopped for a second or two to look towards the road . . . and happily, my camera.

Last month I celebrated my 65th birthday and bought myself a gift - a Canon RF 200-800mm lens. Not L glass (that's Canon's top of the line) but good for a wannabe wildlife photographer to start. Wildlife photography is meant for my relaxation.

This fellow is a photographer poking fun at other photographers, but this does remind me of the time I was on the loop road in Cades Cove and saw a buck by the side of the road. Two women jumped out of the car in front of me, dressed head to toe in camouflage and with camouflage wraps around their cameras and lenses. One hid behind a tree and the other on the other side of their. Ar. I walked up behind the one by the tree, stood there for a few seconds, and 5ne said, “You know he can see you, right?”

The buck just gave me a look, shook his head, and went on grazing.

His official name is Rascal Flatts, but around here we’re calling him Mr. Steal Yo’ Girl.

The head tilt.
The soulful eyes.
The blue gingham bandana.

Frankly, he didn’t come to this portrait session — he arrived to break hearts and update his dating profile.

Some dogs are cute.
Some dogs are charming.
And some dogs sit down in front of the camera and make every woman in the room say, “Awwww, who’s a handsome boy?”

It’s him.
He’s the handsome boy.

Oh, and he was one of the winners of my March Dog of the Month contest. It's May now and entries are open again and . . . what?! You haven't looked to see if YOUR dog meets this month's criteria?! What kind of dog mom/pup dad ARE YOU? Go chek it out - NOW!

Not AI-generated. Photographed by me in Havana, Cuba.

These began as real photographs of real people and real dogs I met while walking through Havana in 2024. The final images were edited with an AI-assisted styling process to create a light sketch effect with muted pastel color — softer, quieter, almost like something pulled from an old travel journal.

And that contrast is exactly what I liked about it.

Havana is beautiful, but it is not polished. It is worn walls, hard sun, chipped paint, stray dogs, open doors, tired steps, and people going about their lives in a city that carries its history right on the surface.

This edit softens the grit without erasing it. It turns the scenes into something more delicate, but the people, the dogs, the place — those are real.

Photography is still the foundation. The camera sees the moment. The editing decides how we remember it.

And sometimes, memory comes in pencil lines and pale color.
