Golden hour over Kearney, Nebraska, a moment where nature quietly takes your breath away.

Each year, thousands of Sandhill cranes fill the skies during their migration, returning to the North Platte River to roost for the night. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky transforms into layers of rich orange and softly textured clouds, creating a striking backdrop for their flight.

Each frame captures its own unique rhythm—subtle shifts in light, movement, and composition that make every moment distinct.

There’s something truly remarkable about witnessing this blend of motion, color, and stillness all at once. I’m grateful to have experienced it—and even more grateful to share it with you.

I hope you enjoy these sunset moments.

We’re Back! (And what a wild ride it was...) 🦢🌾
It feels like we’ve been gone for a month, but would you believe it’s only been a week? Last Thursday, Renee and I headed up to Kearney, Nebraska, for a true "bucket list" excursion: the Sandhill Crane Migration.

It’s known as one of the "Wildlife Wonders of the World," and seeing it in person is a sight we’ll never forget. We came home with a mountain of photos and videos that I can’t wait to share with you all!

However, we also brought back two things we didn't plan for:
➡️1) A nasty stomach bug 🤒 that hitched a ride home with us on Sunday. That’s why we’ve been a bit quiet lately, but we are finally on the mend and finding our feet again!
➡️2) An incredible encounter with Nebraska Prairie Chickens! 🐓

If you’ve never seen these birds in action, you are in for a treat. They are absolutely fascinating to watch. I’ve put together a short 3-minute video of some Prairie Chickens facing off—it’s nature at its most entertaining.

So, if you love interesting wildlife and great Country Music, sit back, turn up the volume, and enjoy the show! 🎶📸

We’ll be back to our regular posting schedule tomorrow. It’s good to be back!

🦅 Incoming: Eagle Dogfight at Loess Bluffs! 🦅

We had a front-row seat to some serious aerial drama at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge on our trip in January. It started with four juvenile Bald Eagles banking toward us like a squadron of fighter jets, but it quickly escalated into a full-blown "claws out" dogfight!

The entire encounter lasted only a few seconds, but the intensity was spectacular:

▪️The Formation: Seeing them lock in and head straight for the camera felt like a scene out of Top Gun.

▪️The Engagement: In a split second, the formation broke and it was all wings and talons.

▪️The Power: Watching these juveniles test their agility with talons extended is a raw reminder of why they're the kings of the sky—even before they get their iconic white feathers.

Nature moves fast, and I’m just glad I had the shutter speed to catch it. Check out the sequence! Click on the photos for full screen view.👇

🦅 The Ultimate "Bird on a Stick!"

If you’re a wildlife photographer, you know we’re always hunting for that perfect "Bird on a Stick" shot—and it doesn't get more ultimate than this! 📸✨ I recently captured this magnificent Bald Eagle perched high above the Ozark landscape near Osage, Arkansas.

Talk about a symbol of power and freedom! Seeing our national bird against the lush green of the Arkansas Ozarks is a high-energy reminder of why this area is so special. 🌲⛰️

🎓 Did You Know?
A Symbol of Strength: The Bald Eagle was chosen as the emblem of the United States in 1782 because of its long life, great strength, and majestic looks. 🗽

Master Architects: Eagles build some of the largest nests of any bird—sometimes reaching 10 feet wide and weighing over a ton! 🏗️🦅

Ozark Residents: While many eagles migrate, the Natural State is home to a growing number of year-round residents thanks to our abundance of clean rivers and lakes. 🐟🌊

There is nothing quite like the rush of seeing that white head and massive wingspan through the lens. It’s the beauty of America and the Ozarks all wrapped into one!

🌅 Recent Magic in Boxley Valley!

There is absolutely nothing like the energy of the Buffalo National River as the morning fog lifts and the valley comes to life. I’ve been looking back through these captures from a recent trip, and the views were just what we always expect ✨
From the sunrise thru the fog, the barn near the mill pond, the elk and the watchful eagle, Boxley is the heart of the Ozarks.

🕊️ From the Archives: The Blue Heron Rookery

I’ve been looking back through my files and found this incredible series from the large Blue Heron rookery on the middle section of the Buffalo National River. While I haven't made it out to this specific site yet this year, these images are a great reminder of the activity we have to look forward to!

I know some people aren't always crazy about Blue Herons because of their skill as fishermen. However, these birds are much more than just "fish eaters". They are highly opportunistic hunters that play a vital role in our local ecosystem by managing populations of:

Insects
Small rodents
Snakes..and just about anything else they can fit in their beaks!

As a protected species, they are a valuable and necessary part of the Buffalo River's natural balance. Watching their complex social behaviors—from mating dances to carefully navigating landings in these high-rise nests—really highlights the unique wildlife of the Ozarks.
