Not all penguins need snow to be happy.

Humboldt Penguins actually prefer a more temperate climate. This swimmer at the Milwaukee County Zoo was showing off some impressive agility. There is nothing quite like the reflection of water on their sleek feathers.

A turtle that talks? 🐢

Yellow-spotted River Turtles are known to communicate with each other using low-frequency sounds. Capturing this one gliding through the water at the Milwaukee County Zoo was a highlight of the day.

The "Swamp Monkey" with the impressive white beard.

De Brazza’s Monkeys are masters of hiding. They are excellent swimmers and will actually dive into the water to avoid predators. Spotted this distinguished fellow during my last trip to the Milwaukee County Zoo.

A lizard that uses its tail like a fifth hand.

Caption: The Emerald Tree Monitor is one of the few lizards with a prehensile tail. This vibrant green hunter at the Milwaukee County Zoo is perfectly adapted for life high in the trees. The scale detail is just incredible.

Meet the underwater rocket! 🐧

Gentoo Penguins are the fastest swimming penguins in the world, hitting speeds of 22 mph. This one at the Milwaukee County Zoo paused just long enough for me to capture its distinct white "bonnet."

The monkey that forgot its thumbs!

The Mantled Guereza (Colobus Monkey) has a unique adaptation: they lack thumbs to help them swing faster through the trees. I loved capturing the high-contrast black and white fur against the enclosure at the Milwaukee County Zoo.

Built like a tank, but moving with surprising grace.

Getting up close with a Black Rhino at the Milwaukee County Zoo. Look closely at that "prehensile" upper lip—it’s a specialized tool designed for grabbing leaves and twigs. A true prehistoric wonder in the modern world.

Nature’s perfect coil. Did you know these snakes are born bright yellow or red?

The striking neon scales of the Green Tree Python are mesmerizing. This beauty at the Milwaukee County Zoo shows off the perfect camouflage for a life spent in the rainforest canopy. 🐍

You’re looking at a bird that technically doesn't exist in the wild.

This brilliant Micronesian Kingfisher is a rare sight. Currently extinct in the wild, the population relies entirely on conservation programs like the one at the Milwaukee County Zoo. The vibrant blues and oranges are a photographer's dream.

A face only a relative could love? We share nearly 97% of our DNA with these incredible beings.

Caught this soulful moment with an Orangutan at the Milwaukee County Zoo. Often called "gardeners of the forest," their intelligence and expressive eyes make every photo a story. It’s a powerful reminder of our connection to the natural world.
