TW // mental illness, eating disorders, self harm, drug mention

For my senior photography project (all the way back in 2015) I did a series on romanticizing mental illness that I presented. With the recent popularity of “13 Reasons Why” I started thinking about it.

For me, this project was really important. I wanted to find a way to talk about mental illness that was approachable. I was going through a lot at the time and had hit an especially bad point in dealing with my anxiety and depression, as well as my eating disorder. I was trying to cope and deal with trauma as well.

I made this series to illustrate how we romanticize mental health issues sometimes, using flowers. It’s kind of a dual meaning, considering that flowers are not only a symbol of life, but are left on our graves after death as well. (This is most prominent in my photo of the scale I think) I think I’m going to reshoot this series sometime soon.
