Milky Way near Priceville, Alabama.

The skies have not been cooperating with me over the last few days for Milky Way photography. I did capture this image early last week, just outside of Priceville, Alabama. This image was taken with an astromodified camera. It allows you to capture colors in the night sky that you cannot normally photograph with a cellphone or normal dSLR. The sky was created from 10 stacked, 2 minute exposures. This allows you to capture more details and color. The foreground was created from one image that was exposed for 90 seconds. This was a difficult exposure due to the fog, which you can see in the image.

Whenever I am in the Asheville area, I have to stop and visit this tree. It is my all time favorite tree. It is just one of those that seems almost human-like. It is hard to tell from the photo, but the winds were howling at about 30 mph. We almost decided not to try to shoot it due to the wind and the rain. The fog just made the scene.

It was very foggy this morning at Wheeler Wildlife Refuge. I really enjoy driving down roads like this.

I spent a few days last week with .w.adamsphoto in the Roan Mountain area of North Carolina. We were hoping to capture the Catawba Rhododendrons, unfortunately, we missed the peak bloom. I did get to hike to Jane Bald along the AT, which is a place I have been wanting to go for a long time. The flame azaleas were still blooming on top of the mountain. I was thankful to be able to capture them. They were a beautiful sight to see.

Photography is a form of art. All art requires a vision before it can happen. Most of my images are done with a lot of planning. The one below required a lot of planning and also a lot luck. I have been wanting to capture a Milky Way panoramic for a long time. I have tried several times, but I had not been satisfied with any of them. I am truly happy with this one. It is probably the most involved image that I have ever captured and put together. The foreground is a single image shot handheld from my kayak. I used a tripod the last time I tried this, but the water levels were too high on this night. The sky was a series of 8 images put together in order to capture the entire Milky Way. I have mentioned this before, the colors in the sky come for hydrogen gas in space that we cannot see with our eyes. It has to be captured with an astromodified camera. The really pink areas in the Milky Way are called nebulae. This was the darkest sky that I have ever seen in Alabama. I could easily see the Milky Way arch and the dust that makes it up. It was a privilege to witness and to capture.
