Comet C/2023 A3 from the back yard this evening! If you missed it, it will be hanging around for the next several days. Look low in the western horizon an hour after sunset. It's dim, but very naked eye visible. This was 8:07pm, 10/13/2024.

Aurora, meet Milky Way
Wow, what a night! Never imagined I'd see Aurora like this in Nebraska. The intensity came and went in waves, at some points dancing across the entire sky and even directly overhead (this image of the "northern lights" is looking toward the ESE!). I'll no doubt be sorting through image files for weeks to come, but this one screamed "me first!" Arrived at Crystal Lake around 9:45p.m., the Milky Way rose around midnight, and this was at 2:10a.m. this morning, 5/11/2024.

This memory pops up each March... An unforgettable overnight stay in a 4x8' plywood shack of a blind (no floor, electricity or plumbing). They didn't drop in until well after sunset. Then, waiting for morning light, kept me entertained all night long with "Song & Dance!"

Thanks to everyone that sent good wishes as I closed out my 64th spin around the sun! Up early, as usual, I started this first day of my new year chasing the setting full moon over the rural Nebraska countryside, just after sunrise. "Full moon" began this morning at 6:31 CST... If you missed it you'll have another chance this evening, as it rises in the ENE at 6:37pm (about 20 minutes after sunset).

A planned early morning Milky Way outing this week (4/18/2023). I try to scope out potential locations when we're out on our daily walks, and this one at Prairie Lake (Adams County, SW of Hastings, Nebraska) caught my eye... I got started a little late, it was a quarter- to half-mile hike in the dark to the location and astronomical twilight (5:12 a.m. on this morning) had already started a few minutes before I got set up to shoot . Before leaving I shot the foreground (tripod unmoved) with a wee bit of ambient light beginning to help with illumination -- although it was still quite dark, as shown by the farmhouse light in the distant horizon.
Sky: f/2.8, 10 sec., ISO 4000
Foreground (several mins later) f/2.8, 30 sec., ISO 6400).

Looking through crane seasons past... Always striving to improve my nature photography, each spring I'm taken back to this magical moment in March 2014. It was pure luck that I was in the right spot/right time that, misty morning, as the fog rising off the river was momentarily flooded with sunrise color. Now, equipped with modern planning apps (along with improvement in imaging technology), I know the sun will be returning to this position over this portion of the Platte River in coming days, a spot that the cranes still favor to roost overnight... So I'll have a chance to "up the bar" a notch, if the weather (and a good dose of LUCK) cooperates! Next few days I'll post a few from then, my all-time favorite Sandhill Sunrise Morning. I added one to as a cover photo this morning, here's another:
