There have been many times when I felt my work has helped shape how the Hula is seen by the world. Most often when I have been doing exhibits or shows and places like San Diego or San Francisco would sponsor a Pacific Island festival and there will be 15,000 people there. I did an art show in Tokyo one time at a very prestigious art gallery and they told me that 10,000 people a day showed up, and I had broken all their attendance records. I know times like that changed a lot of people‘s perspective and gave them a new and different way to understand the Hula and how it had been suppressed and changed for so many years.

In Hula Kāhiko, the eyes do more than look.

They lead.
They listen.

They carry the emotion of the mele (chant).

This second video in our movement series focuses on the eyes: the intensity, the focus, and the presence that help bring the story forward.

In Hula Kāhiko, meaning is not held in one gesture alone. It lives in the connection between the chant, the body, the hands, the feet, the expression, and the gaze. The eyes can reveal reverence, strength, longing, warning, devotion, or connection to place and spirit.

They draw us into the story.

The eyes may carry the focus, but sometimes the perfect frame takes a little teamwork. 👀

For Kim Taylor Reece, every detail matters. The direction of the gaze. The expression. The movement. Even the way the hair falls around the face.
