Photographs from my "Captured on Film" project are featured in the 2022-2023 issue of Portfolio Platform at the Midwest Center for Photography. The portfolios are available until May 2023 for patrons of the gallery to view online, learn about the ten photographers and their work through the images, biographies and artist statements, and have the opportunity to purchase photographs. After almost a year of work on this project, the exhibition is up! And Candy, my favorite Gallery Director, has earned a shout-out for her encouragement and for hanging a wonderful-looking show. It opens online and in the Gallery tomorrow, with a reception on Saturday from 2-4pm at Color | Ink Studio in Hazel Park.

There are also group shots in the exhibition. Study the "body language", and consider the conversation that is taking place here.

The pinhole camera adds a unique softness to the images, which enhances these portraits of inanimate objects and helps to give them personality.

I wanted to do something totally different with this project. Using a pinhole camera... for photographs on film... with traditional prints on silver-based paper... creating intimate portraits of old, discarded, and rusty things... mission accomplished!

The print is then placed in a frame. The mat is hinged to the backer with fabric tape to keep it in place. The photo is carefully positioned and attached to the backer with full-view mounting corners, allowing the print to be removed at a later date without damage. The frame is closed up, wired and labeled on the back, and ready to hang.

Once a print is spotted, information about the enlargement is written on the back with a soft pencil. Then the print is titled and signed. I prefer to sign on the back of the print instead of the front of the mat to give the framed print a completely clean look.

More common is a white spot on the print caused by a bit of dust on the negative or from bleaching. It's carefully filled in with dye from a dry spot retouching sheet and applied using a "000" retouching brush until the tone matches. Meticulous work!

Many of the prints need a bit of retouching. If there is a black spot on the print caused by a clear, undeveloped area on the negative, it can be "bleached" with a potassium ferricyanide solution applied by a tiny brush. The print is then re-fixed, re-washed, and ready to be spotted once it's dry.
