I always ask whether the little brother can come. 🤍

Sometimes the answer is "oh, it's her day, we didn't want to take anything away from it." I understand that completely. And then look what happens when he turns up in his good clothes anyway.

The second frame isn't posed. I didn't say "hug your sister." I said something about how he was obviously the one in charge around here — and he grabbed her, and she made THAT face, and I got maybe two frames of it before it was over and they were arguing about who got to stand in front. 😄

That's the one that gets framed. Every time.

Here's the thing about siblings at this exact age: on paper, they are each other's biggest problem. And then every so often the guard comes down for about four seconds and you get to see what's actually underneath it. You can't schedule that. You definitely can't ask for it. You can only be standing there with a camera when it happens.

So — bring the brother. Bring the sister. Bring the cousin who's staying with you that week. It costs you nothing and it changes the entire gallery. ✨

He's five. He will tell you. He will tell you several times. 🖐️

No theme. No props. No backdrop with his name spelled out on it. Just a good shirt, decent window light, and a kid extremely committed to showing me precisely how many years old he is.

I love these sessions and I don't post them nearly enough — so consider this your reminder that a session doesn't have to be A Whole Production. Sometimes it's twenty minutes, one outfit and a wall of soft light, and you walk out with the photo of him that lives on your mother-in-law's fridge for the next decade.

Fair warning on photographing a five-year-old, from someone who does it constantly:
— The first ten minutes are the Fake Smile. We do not keep the Fake Smile.
— Somewhere around minute twelve he forgets I'm in the room. THAT's when it happens.
— The word "p**p" works every single time and I'm not proud of it. 💀

Nobody books photos of the ten-year-old. 🎉

Newborn? Booked. First birthday? Booked, with a theme and a custom banner and a cake nobody eats. And then… a nine-year gap, where the only professional photo anyone takes of her is a school picture with a laser background and her eyes half shut.

Meanwhile: she picked this shirt out herself. She has OPINIONS about her hair now. She still throws her arms up when she's happy — and I am telling you that is not going to last much longer.

This is the age everyone skips and it's the one I'd argue for hardest. No milestone. No theme. Just her, at ten, being ten, before she gets self-conscious about a camera being pointed at her at all.

Also, and I say this as the mother of one of these: a big kid in a studio is FUN. No nap window. No bribery. She threw that confetti herself roughly forty times and cackled every single time. 😄

"What should I bring? What should she wear? Do I need to buy something?" 🤍

Short answer: no. Bring the baby, the diapers, and yourself.

I keep a whole collection of this at the studio — wraps, bonnets, headbands, little dresses like this one. You do not need to go out and buy an outfit she'll wear once and that you'll find in a drawer four years from now.

Here's the part people don't realise about a newborn session: I've already thought about all of it. The wrap. The blanket. Whether that headband is going to leave a mark on her forehead (it won't — it comes off between setups). Which colours are going to look right on your actual wall, and not just on my screen.

Your job for the entire session is this: feed her, cuddle her, and let me do the rest. That's the whole list. 😌

The one thing I will always say yes to — if you have something that MEANS something, a blanket somebody knitted, a gown that was yours, bring it. We'll build a setup around it, and it is almost always everyone's favourite frame of the day. 🤍

Everyone says the first birthday is for the baby. 🎂

It isn't. She has no idea what's happening. She is going to eat the confetti, cry at the candle, and remember exactly none of it.

The first birthday is for YOU.

It's for the one who did the 3am feeds. And the 4am ones. Who googled things at two in the morning that we don't need to get into here. Who hasn't finished a hot cup of coffee in twelve months. Who spent a whole year doing the least-thanked, most important work there is.

You made it a year. Both of you did. 🥹

So when a mom books a first birthday session, I'm not only photographing the baby — I'm documenting the year YOU survived. Which is exactly why I'm going to ask you to get in the frame. Yes, you. I know precisely how you feel about how you look right now. Do it anyway. You'll want it later, I promise.

Somebody asked me last week if I ever get bored of photographing newborns. 🌙

Fifteen years. Thousands of babies. The same beige blankets, the same tiny hands, the same 6am editing sessions after a full work day.

Honest answer: no. And the reason is a little bit selfish.

Every time I lay a baby down on that blanket, some part of me is sixteen years back in my own living room. Twenty-something, completely terrified, holding a brand new camera I did not know how to operate, staring at a son I could not stop staring at. I bought that camera because I was scared of forgetting him. That was it. That was the entire business plan. 📷

That kid is a teenager now. He's taller than me, he communicates primarily in grunts, and he would genuinely rather do ANYTHING on this earth than let his mother photograph him. 😅

So no. I don't get bored. Every single one of these is me getting to do, for somebody else's family, the thing I so badly wanted done for mine — before their sixteen years went by the way mine did.

That's the job. Freezing the parts that disappear. Everything else is just lighting. ✨

"I'll book it after she's born." 🌸

I hear this every week, and I get it completely. You don't want to jinx anything. You don't know how you'll feel. You don't know what day she's actually coming.

Here's the only reason I ever push back on it.

The newborn window is about two weeks wide. That sleepy, curled-up, still-folded-the-way-she-was-inside stage does not last, and it does not wait around for you to find a photographer you like. By the time most people start looking, the thing they wanted a photo of has already ended.

So what I actually hold is your DUE date, not a session date. 📅

You go have your baby. You text me when she's here. We find a day in the next week or two that works for you. And if she comes early or late — which, statistically, she absolutely will 😅 — we just move it. That's the whole system. No panicked 3am scrolling from a hospital bed looking for someone with availability.

Look at her. 10 days old here, and she will never fit in that basket again — she barely fit that morning. 🌸

She has a Thing. 🩰

Not a phase — a THING. The kind that eats your Saturdays, the back seat of your car, and somewhere around forty percent of your household budget in shoes alone.

And one day it will just... stop. She'll be seventeen and it'll be something else, or nothing at all, and this entire chapter of your life will exist only in your memory and about nine hundred blurry recital videos filmed from row M. 🎥

So we made real photographs of it instead. Not phone-in-the-dark-from-the-audience photographs. Real ones. Of her, doing the thing she loves, at the exact age she loves it most.

Whatever your kid's Thing is right now — ballet, baseball, violin, horses, chess, dinosaurs, that one video game you don't understand — it's going to end, and it deserves better than row M.

You think you'll remember how small they were. 🤍

You won't.

I say this as someone whose "baby" is now a teenager who is taller than me. I have THOUSANDS of photos of him and I still cannot make my brain hold onto how tiny his hands used to be. The photos hold it for me. That's the whole reason I started doing this.

And I know exactly what's going through your head right now, because every newborn mom says some version of it: "he'll cry the whole time." "she only sleeps on me." "I don't look like myself yet."

So here's how a newborn session actually goes with me: slowly. 🕰️

We take two to three hours, and not because I need three hours — because your baby doesn't run on a schedule. We stop to feed. We stop to change. We stop because he decided the beige blanket was a good place to p*e, which happens more often than you'd think. 😅 Nobody is rushing. Nothing is ruined. You sit on my couch and let someone else be in charge for a minute.

Then I hand him back to you, and a few weeks later you get the ten minutes of his newborn life you'll want back the most.

If communion is coming up, here's what actually helps the day go smoothly (from someone who's shot a lot of these). 📝

1️⃣ Book the photos for BEFORE the reception if you can — everyone's fresher, the light's usually better, and nobody's worried about cake on the dress yet.

2️⃣ Bring the rosary, the bible, any family heirlooms — jewelry passed down, a veil someone else wore. These make the best detail shots and the most meaningful ones later.

3️⃣ Golden hour outdoors (like this) softens everything and works beautifully with white dresses and suits — no harsh shadows on faces.

4️⃣ Give yourselves 10 extra minutes of buffer. Communion mornings are chaos, and a few unrushed minutes make a real difference in how everyone looks and feels.

5️⃣ Let the kids be a LITTLE bit silly for a few frames too — not just the serious portraits. Those end up being everyone's favorites later.
