Another one from last night in Sewaren. The Miriam Moran works alongside the Egret as the crew prepares for docking. It’s always the people that make these giant ships feel even bigger.

Captures Over Coffee ☕🇺🇸 Flag Day Edition

Going back a few years to a cold morning on the Perth Amboy waterfront. I was photographing the gulls when I noticed the American flag lined up perfectly behind one perched atop a lamp post.

You never know what you’ll see. Always look up!

People who live along this stretch of road in Sewaren must have been wondering what the heck I was doing. 😂

I spent a good amount of time walking up and down the roadside, peeking through the trees, trying to find just the right opening for this view of the tanker Spring Street. The goal wasn’t just to photograph the ship—I was also trying to get the Freedom Tower lined up in the background.

Sometimes the challenge isn’t finding the vessel. It’s finding the shot.

Worth it for this frame.

Captures Before Coffee! ☕️🚢

Today should really be called Captures Before Coffee! I headed down to the Carteret waterfront before my second cup and wasn’t expecting much.

Then the Seaways Lonsdale came traveling north on the Kill.

Maybe I’m a geek, but I get way too excited when I see these ships. The size, the colors, the complexity, and all the little details make them endlessly interesting to photograph.

The best part? I didn’t even notice the crew members standing on deck until I got home and started reviewing the images. With a reported crew of about 21 people, that’s roughly 10% of them right there! Seeing those crew members helps put the scale into perspective and gives a true sense of just how massive this tanker really is. (Bonus points for comparing the seagull or huge anchor!!!)

Captures Over Coffee ☕️📸

One from the archives.

Walking through Lower Manhattan, I noticed the door to this newsstand cracked open just enough to reveal the worker inside.

One of those moments that most people probably walked right past.

March 2017. Seaside Heights, NJ.

I took several photos along the boardwalk that day. It was just getting ready for the season that was quickly approaching. I wanted to document the changes to the boardwalk in the years following Sandy.

What first drew me to this scene was how colorful and busy it was in this area. There was so much to take in.

Years later, while looking back through the images, I noticed the guy behind the counter waving at me. Somehow I never saw it when I took the photo.

A reminder that there’s always something new to discover in old images.

Captures Over Coffee ☕️📸

Another one from my recent visit to Liberty State Park.

One of my favorite images from that evening and one of my favorite techniques for capturing motion—panning.
