She came. She saw. She conquered… with fists full of cake.

I think it’s safe to say this sweet girl understood the assignment. Flowers, pretty cake, and absolutely zero hesitation when it came to digging in.

Cake smashes don’t always need an elaborate theme or a set filled with props.

Sometimes, simple is where the magic is.

A clean backdrop, a beautiful cake, and your baby right in the middle of it all. Because at the end of the day, it’s those little expressions, messy fingers, frosting-covered cheeks, and big personality that you’ll want to remember.

There’s something about a simple set that lets you focus on what really matters.

The baby. The moment. The memories.

And honestly? I think that’s pretty perfect.

A typical cake smash session in my studio is equal parts adorable, chaotic, and completely unpredictable.

We start with a few sweet, clean portraits before the cake makes its appearance. Then comes the fun part… tiny fingers in icing, curious little tastes, big smiles, questionable expressions, and usually at least one moment where someone decides they are absolutely not touching that cake.

Every baby is different, and that’s what I love most. Some dive straight in, some delicately pick at the frosting, and some are far more interested in the cake stand than the actual cake.

There is no pressure for the “perfect” smash. The best photos come from letting your little one explore, play, and simply be themselves.

And honestly? The messy moments usually end up being everyone’s favorite.

Because turning one only happens once, and I think it deserves to be celebrated with cake.

I was going to put this in stories but ended up being a long video so I made it into a reel. FALL MINIS are officially posted. Please find the link in my bio. Cannot wait for another incredible season.

There’s something so fun about creating a set that ties right into their little personality, and thanks to my girl Partin's Creations this basketball-themed cake was the perfect centerpiece for this sweet boy’s first birthday.

And then there’s the reality of photographing a ONE year old who is already walking…

You can have the cutest set, the perfect cake, and everything beautifully styled, and suddenly your little guy decides, “Actually, I think I’ll just walk away now.”

And he does.

So we play, we redirect, we move fast, and we let them be who they are. Sometimes the best images happen in those little in-between moments anyway.

Because a walking one year old may make the session a little more challenging, but it also gives you so much personality to capture.

Game day, but make it cake.

This little guy brought his Celtics spirit to the studio for a birthday celebration filled with basketball, big smiles, and a whole lot of cake. And honestly, I think we have a future MVP on our hands.

Fun, exciting and chaotic in the best way. This family really embraced the messy and it made for some incredible images. Family portraits are always fun and interesting but this one really took the cake. Angela Curley can’t wait to see what you come up with for next year
