In late June I had a mother reach out to me and inquire whether I would photograph a celebration of life for her first born son.
Typically, this is something that I likely would not entertain. There was something about the energy coming through those messages, we just continued conversation back-and-forth and before I knew it we planned the day ~the anniversary of her son’s passing over August 15.
I asked Alissa if she would be OK to do this as it felt more than a coincidence that the one behind the camera that day would be her. Alissa lost her own father in a motorcycle accident so stepping into the moment, carried a weight and understanding that when far beyond the photos.
She photographed a celebration of life for a young man named Hasani, who passed away far too soon in a motorcycle accident on North Ocean Avenue.
His mother wanted one thing above all: to capture everyone who came to celebrate him •every face, every hug, every person whose life he touched .
She wanted her family to have something to hold on to for years to come.
What struck me most was her strength. She is grieving in the deepest way a parent can, and yet she carries herself with a peace that comes from knowing her son is okay, and that he would want her to keep living fully, with joy, in his honor. That kind of grace in the middle of unimaginable loss is something I won’t forget. She truly blew me away!
I am so grateful she trusted us to be there *to quietly document the love that day so her family can look back and remember Hasani for exactly who he was.
There was something about the sun that day…it was warm and bright yet so soft and comforting . She agreed. He was there.
Rest easy, Hasani. Your mother’s love for you is a light and your very life along with a deep faith in God carries her. It’s so clearly woven into everything she does. What a mother. What a woman.
