Goodbye Georgia…Hello South Carolina

Tonight we are staying just outside of Columbia, South Carolina on a military campground Weston Lake Recreation Area/Fort Jackson. This campground is very secluded with 45 sites however only 13 of them have full hookups and most of them are already occupied by full time living. The sites are not on top of each other and has plenty of space to spread out. There is a bathroom but it is nothing fancy to tell you about lol

I will say I was very nervous as we are driving in not knowing where to go we did stop and unhooked Finn so I could drive ahead. We were not sure if there was a guard gate, how narrow the road would get and from the map there was no turn around if we made a wrong turn. So off I went….no gate and once I found the office it had a huge gravel parking lot.

The facility offers so much to do! This would be a wonderful weekend getaway to just have fun. The lake has a beach, swimming area, water rentals, cabins, walking path it just goes on! Oh and don’t forget the view of the lake.

We are still here just enjoying life a little different so it is taking me some time to post

Beautiful Savannah Georgia came and went so fast! We did a tour bus today and got caught up in all the things to see we missed taking photos. This city is definitely in need of more time than just a day. So, until we meet again here is what we saw…

Fort Pulaski National Monument did not disappoint!

The fort started to come to life in 1829 but it took 18 years and over 1 million dollars to complete. It was made out of Savannah Grey brick and everyone thought nothing could shoot through them as the walls were 11 feet thick. It was built to defend Savannah and the rest of the United States. But a change of events happened and its most use was during the Civil War. The possession of the fort changed from a United States fort, to belong to the state of Georgia, then transferred to the Confederate States of America. Then a 50 day siege and 2 day artillery battle took place for The United States to regain possession. After all the fighting, in the 20th century Fort Pulaski was simply abandoned. As we visited the fort and learning all it went through and the many lives it touched I found myself with an overwhelming feeling of trying to understand the American history and how sad it is easily forgotten. How are we here today? What people went through for us to have what we have today and the many that never know.

Tybee Island Lighthouse Station and Museum is our first stop exploring this area. During our visit the lighthouse is in the process of preservation and is still in need of donations to complete. This historic lighthouse was built in 1773 and is Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse that guides mariners into the Savannah River. It has had many preservations over time and the final was restoring the lower section with metal and masonry making it completely fire proof.

continues to Savannah, GA. We picked a wonderful RV park, Creekfire RV Resort but did not get to enjoy all of the amenities as we were out and about everyday seeing as much of what Savannah has to offer.

We stayed in site 89 over by the lake and I will say I think away from the all the amenities was very peaceful. It is a easy walk or bike ride to the clubhouse area that provides a pool, lazy river, kids splash zone, bone fire, volley ball & tennis courts and is also where the laundry and gym are located.

This is a great resort to stay at, just be sure to allow yourself some time to enjoy it which is what we will do if there is a next time!

Enjoying the day sightseeing at Fort Fredrica National Monument on St Simons Island.

Georgia was founded in 1733 and three years later the fort was established by General James Edward Oglethorpe to protect against the Spanish attacking from Florida. Many years had passed before a large number of settlers called this home. To learn more about the history put this on your pit stop list and you be disappointed.

Taking it southern slow and working our way up the coast of Georgia

I found a very small and quaint two night stay at McIntosh Manor. Perfect for us as we like how peaceful it is and not all the hustle of people coming and going. We were in spot #2 with no shade so in the summer this spot will get hot. The kids were in the middle of the circle closest to us (you can see it on the 2nd map I found). They just started opening that area up but it had full shadow under the trees. The laundry was free to use and the Wi-Fi was great! The is a community fire pit but we did not use it. When making the reservation I communicated with them by text very easily. We checked in with no one, when straight to our sites and enjoyed.

All set up, did laundry, played some games…tomorrow we venture out to see the sights in the area!

Next on our list was Driftwood Beach. Jey did some research before going but I did not. I wanted to see with my own eyes the beauty he was talking about and not get my hopes up from social media pictures with all the editing and making places look better than they really are. The image in my mind was crowded beaches, no place to take good pictures unless you wait for hours just to get 2 seconds of beauty.
We come around the bend to find only one car parked in a small area just off the road. I give Jey a confused look and now thinking there really is nothing here to see because no one is here…we have been tricked by social media! We park and while Jey is getting his camera gear ready the kids start walking the path with the dogs so I kick off my sandals and follow behind. You can’t see the beach from the parking area and the path is not a straight shot. I come around the last turn on the path and………now you have to wait until tomorrow!

Now that we are on the Jekyll Island let’s play tourist, drive around and see what sights we find. Parked and started to walk the paths and found the Plantation Oak which is the largest and oldest tree on the island. The Horton House (that I kind find my picture of) that was built in the mid 1700’s, A home I just found to be beautiful, Villa Ospo built 1927 and then we found the largest and oldest plantation tree on the island. It is estimated to be 350 years old, to me that is amazing the storms that hit this island causing damage and the tree is still here!

Jekyll Island sure knows how to do it!

To come on the island they charge what they call a parking fee. You drive through it just like a toll booth. $8.00 for a car $12.00 for an oversized vehicle. We don’t think this fee is bad for what all you get to do and the beauty you are able to see. This turned out to be one of my favorite places for how unique it is but the Noseeum bugs can change your opinion real fast! Be prepared and the spray. If you are bringing the rv to stay keep everything closed unless you have the really fine screens.
