It only took 28 years of my life for people to realize that Puerto Rican culture is cool, decades for my elders, + from up above for my ancestors to see. Thank you for everyone that watched the + appreciated it, whether your Latin or not. To understand we can have fun, but it still be political. Politics is personal, it’s made up of people, whether it directly affects you or not. Rejoice is a form of resistance, “they” may be able to arrest our bodies, but they can’t take away our spirit. My elders chose assimilation and conformity over certain cultural practices as a form of protection + pride to fit into a community that turned their back on them. Spanish isn’t my native language, but I love to learn + for someone to teach me; I can understand more than I can speak. Shame + shunning from people, even from my own culture stings + leaves a mark no one can see. EVERYONE just wants to belong + we need EMPATHY more than EVER right now. Don’t turn away from others, + don’t turn your back on your own community because you see them as more privileged than you. The point is for each generation to get a chance that past generations could never even conceptualize. Let’s stop playing the Oppression Olympics, that’s exactly what “they” want us to do; beat each other down so we create our own propaganda + ignore the bigger problem, corrupted elite in power. I feel so saddened that had to cut his performance short, wear a bullet proof vest, create a sporadic choreography routine, in order for his safety not only physically, but for ease of his mind. The fact that there was even an opposing “All American” alternative half time show is jarring and repulsive, especially since Bad Bunny IS American. Being Latin American shouldn’t have to be an oxymoron; + if you’re Latin + not “American” it doesn’t make you an alien, you are still a person + you still matter.
