Houston is doing what Houston does… making us question every outdoor plan. ☀️🥵

This is the time of year I start recommending indoor sessions, and honestly, it’s for everyone’s sake.

Kids get hot and flustered fast. Sweat shows up on clothes almost immediately. Hair has its own agenda, everyone needs a water break, and yes… I’m out there sweating and dehydrating right along with you.

The good news? We don’t need to brave the heat to create something beautiful.

A studio is always an option, but so is your home. I can walk into almost any house and find a spot with beautiful light. Some of my favorite images have been made in living rooms, bedrooms, and little corners most people would never think twice about.

The Crockell Butterfly Center in the museum district. Many people over this location for photo shoots, but it definitely transports you into a different world that feels like nothing like Houston.

I absolutely loved this Maternity session there, the color the contrast the shadows the light was absolutely gorgeous just like the mama to be.

Cancer sucks!

You know, working in this industry you meet a lot of wonderful people. At first they’re part of your network, but somewhere along the way they become your friends.

Victoria Brand & Business Architect for Photographers | Mentorship | OBM Victoria Garcia was one of those people.

We instantly connected. We had the same quirky sense of humor, we were both female photographers, drawn to the same kind of art, and we were both Leos. I was also fortunate enough to capture a few of the biggest moments in her life, memories that I’ll always be grateful I got to preserve for her and her family.

I still remember the day she was at my house and told me, “I don’t feel well, but I’m going to get tested soon.”

That test came back positive for stage 4 colon cancer.

She fought a long, hard battle over the last few years. And in the most Victoria way possible, she refused to let cancer define her. She made memories. She created experiences for her children, her husband, and herself. She documented everything she could. She kept traveling. She kept living as fully as her health would allow.

And here we are today.

Left with her memories. Her jokes. Her laughter. Her art. Her legacy.

Houston lost one of its greatest brand photographers. She was always lifting up this community, especially other women in photography. She genuinely wanted to see people succeed.

My heart is with her children, her husband, and everyone who loved her.

We love you, Victoria.

One day, they’ll stop looking at the world like this. 💛

The flowers won’t be the most fascinating thing they’ve ever seen, every shadow won’t deserve a pause, every sound won’t make them turn their head in wonder.

I think some of my favorite moments as a photographer is being able to wait, observe the children and see how they are experiencing their environment. It’s fascinating and a great reminder that sometimes we just need to slow down.
