Are 30+ minute client/photographer relationship building calls sending the wrong vibe?
Believe me, most professionals would be happy with 10-15 minute unpaid consultation calls over setting aside an hour if they knew that was what you truly wanted. No one wants to waste your time, but we do want to make sure you feel heard and have all your questions answered.
It became a popular post recently online where a Gen Z bride was bashing photographers for going over 15 minutes on an intro call.
Having been in the industry 7 years, I am all for adapting to the needs of couples, but the comments had mixed reactions. Many pros chimed in to say that is the time they set aside to really get to know you and what you want on your wedding day. Please understand this comes from a history of couples following our work on socials, The Knot, visiting our website, scouting a package that might work and calling to make sure we are the pro they think we are.
They are few questions away from a decision, and the remainder of the time is spent building the friendship and rapport. I can completely see having many calls with the same type of vendor can be exhausting, so my best advice is to narrow it all down before a call.
For photography, if you like their work, find a package that fits your budget, and you could spend a day hanging out with them, check that box and move on. No need to interview more than 3 of any vendor. That gets you into decision making paralysis. Also, do mention ahead of time if you want to designate a specific amount of time for a call and any pro will be glad to accommodate. As for me, I set aside about an hour to make sure each couple has my undivided attention.
