**LET'S HAVE AN HONEST CONVERSATION ABOUT “FREE” SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY.**
This is probably going to ruffle some feathers, but I think it’s a conversation our high school sports community needs to have.
When a hobbyist photographer offers to photograph a school or athletic program for free, it sounds like a win.
The school gets pictures.
The athletes get pictures.
The parents get pictures.
Nobody pays anything.
**But is it really free?**
What happens to the professional photographer trying to build a sustainable business?
What happens to the booster club that could have generated fundraising revenue through photography?
What happens to the athletic department that could have partnered with a legitimate media organization to provide more than just game-day pictures?
And most importantly…
**What happens to the athletes when the value of professional sports media is slowly driven toward $0?**
This isn't an attack on hobbyist photographers. There are some incredibly talented people out there who simply love photographing sports.
This is about understanding the difference between:
📸 **Someone with a camera taking pictures**
and
🏢 **A verified media outlet investing in an athletic program.**
There is a BIG difference.
A professional media organization isn't just showing up with a camera.
We're investing in equipment, insurance, editing, storage, websites, galleries, backups, travel, credentials, technology, staff, marketing, copyright protection and—most importantly—building long-term programs designed to create value for athletes, families, schools and booster clubs.
And sometimes, **giving something away for free can have consequences far beyond the transaction itself.**
So I'm going to start a discussion about this.
Not to bash anyone.
Not to tell schools who they should work with.
But to ask a legitimate question:
# # # **Are “free” sports photos actually free—or are we simply shifting the cost somewhere else?**
I'd genuinely like to hear from **athletic directors, coaches, booster club members, parents, athletes AND photographers.**
Let's have the conversation.
**Agree? Disagree? Tell me why.**
