On Tuesday, June 17, 2005, we bid farewell to our boy Oscar. He just turned 14 on Wednesday the 11th and as far as we knew was the picture of perfect health. However, on Sunday the 15th, a sudden onset of a series of seizures revealed what was likely to be an underlying mass or tumor in his head. He went from jogging and being playful on Sunday to not being able to walk on Tuesday.
Thankfully, we were able to bring him home for his sendoff. His Grandma and Grandpa Larry were able to come over and say their final tear-strewn goodbyes, filled with scratches and rubs. Jo held cradled in his arms through the process to the very end.
I am absolutely devastated by the loss of my best friend, my summer break compatriot, our loyal companion for 14 years, though I’m grateful he is no longer in pain or distress. He will be cremated along with his best friend/security blanket, a stuffed elephant named Ellie.
Jo and I are extremely grateful to the caring and compassionate team of doctors, vet techs, and staff at , as well as the caring folks at and the doctor who came to our house to ease his suffering from . They provided with clay imprints of his front paws and clippings of hair from his soft velvety ears and his hind quarters where he loved to get “butt scratches.”
My Bud-Bud was truly one of a kind; a funny, charismatic, extremely intelligent, and at times peculiar fella. Sometimes you really had to wonder who was training who. He was very much a routine-oriented dog, but I swear who knew how to manipulate his routines to, say, get more treats. For example, the meal routine was that Oscar would get his food, and when he was finished he’d get dessert (say, a Greenie after breakfast and a No-Hide stick after dinner). So, Oscar would eat like half-to-three-quarters of the bowl and act done, just staring at you like “this is all I want to eat. Dessert please.” So we’d get his dessert, he’d eat it… and then go back and finish his dinner. And then he’d have THE AUDACITY to stare at you again as if to say, “Ok, I finished. Dessert please.” 🤣🤣🤣 I
Oscar is, was, and will forever be The Best Boy™️.
