This is a picture of a male barred owl at Secor Park. He flew in and gave food to the mother who was feeding their young then flew off. I stayed and continued watching the mother feed after he left. As I was packing up and getting ready to leave I looked up and saw that the male had come back and was watching me. Owls are so attentive to their young and typically mate for life. I love watching them ☺️

When a fledgling leaves the nest they don't always make it back up to the nest right away. This little one was 6 feet off the ground and in plain sight and it still blended in so well! I found it because Mom flew over me and kept looking at where I was standing. I knew there was a nest and started wondering if a baby was nearby that had fledged and sure enough this little one was standing on a branch right next to me! It's amazing how much wildlife we miss daily that's right out in the open. Animals camouflage so well ❤️

I was always told that when you know of an area where there are owls and can't find them you've got to listen to the birds and you'll find the owls. On this particular occasion it was true! This owl happened to be sleeping in a tree when a group of pesky crows spotted it. From then on they were squawking and carrying on while dive bombing this guy. The owl was definitely not wanted! It reminded me of a scene out of Alfred Hitchcock The Birds movie!

Although I wasn't fortunate enough to find any short eared owls this year I still have plenty of shots I can revisit from years past. This particular day I was alone and in one of my favorite spots to view them in the wild. There happened to be several out hunting that day and I got to sit in my car taking as many pictures as I could. It was extremely exciting! They fly so fast and change direction so quickly making them a thrill to photograph! The best was when this one landed in the ditch right next to me and posed. I took a few shots and then froze as it's beautiful yellow eyes watched me. It was one of the best times I've had watching them fly and hunt but that moment it stopped and stared back at me was something special. Love moments like that!
